Hazelwood College is a Grant Maintained Integrated School, an all-ability co-educational college for post primary children aged 11 to 18.
Hazelwood College was the second post-primary integrated school to be established in Northern Ireland. There are now 15 such schools. Founded in 1985 by a group of Protestant and Catholic parents from North Belfast and funded originally by the major charities including BELTIE (Belfast Educational Trust for Integrated Education) and the fund-raising efforts of parents, we are now in our 14th year. We have a student enrolment of 700 students. Hazelwood College opened in temporary premises on 1st September 1985. In September 1986 we moved to our permanent premises in Gray's Lane. In August 1988 the government recognised the Colleges educational viability by granting it maintained status. The College, with the full support of parents, applied successfully for Grant Maintained Integrated Status (GMIS) in 1989. This entitles the College to 100% direct funding from the Department of Education for running costs and all major building projects

"We gained a very strong impression that an important part of the explanation of the success of Hazelwood College lay in the attitude held towards achievement. In a range of different ways it was clear that expectations placed on pupils are high, that the school consciously and deliberately celebrates achievements by pupils and that achievement is defined by the school in a variety of ways."

Admission Policy

Admission to Hazelwood

If you wish your child to attend the College you should:

    1. Pay a preliminary visit to the College on Open Days or Open Nights
    2. Complete a pre-enrolment application form.
    3. Make an appointment for interview with the Principal
The decision on your child's secondary education is one of the most important decisions affecting his/her future that you will make. Before coming to a decision you might like to talk to a parent who already has a child at the college. The following parents have volunteered to act as Parent Liaison Officers. They will be pleased to talk to you about any aspect of College life. Don't hesitate to telephone one of them if you have any queries.

Policy on admission of students

Hazelwood College is an all-ability, co-educational, integrated school. The Board of Governors seeks to maintain a reasonable balance between Catholics and Protestant students as outlined in the statement of principles of the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education. They will also seek to maintain a similar balance between boys and girls. If there are more applicants than places, the College will admit students by applying the College Admissions criteria. These criteria, set out below, will be applied separately to applicants from Protestant and Roman Catholic backgrounds. 20% of places will be reserved for others who may be from a "mixed tradition" background, from a different religious/ethnic background or from those of no religious affiliation. The following criteria will be applied separately to each category:
    1. Students who have attended an integrated primary school.
    2. Students who have/had a brother or sister at the College.
    3. Students whose parents work or have worked in the College.
    4. Students who are the first child in their family.
    5. Students who have attended a co'educational primary school.
    6. Students in order of preĐenrolment up to admissions number.
Parents/guardians of prospective students must complete a pre-enrolment form and attend for interview with the Principal. The religious affiliation of a student will be decided by:
1 Information supplied to the College by the parent on the College's pre-enrolment form.
2 The religious affiliation noted on or attached to the Transfer Form.
3 The category of primary school which the student attended, i.e. controlled or maintained.
In the event of the Governors being unable to decide the religious affiliation, then the applicant will be deemed as "Other".
