About Hedingham

Hedingham School is situated in an attractive rural location between the villages of Castle and Sible Hedingham on the banks of the river Colne. The school is set on an expansive site with excellent grounds, a farm unit and an inspiring view of Hedingham Castle. As a partnership school with the Faculty of Education at Cambridge University, we are recognised as a school devoted to learning and teaching. Hedingham School has an excellent reputation for quality service.

In a caring environment where every child feels valued and encouraged, we achieve very good results at KS3, GCSE and A level. We expect our students to perform above the national average, and we aim to challenge each individual to perform to the best of their ability.

Mr J Panayi - Headteacher

We are proud of our school’s reputation in our local and wider community. We provide a high quality, comprehensive educational experience for all of our students and ensure that each individuals academic potential is fulfilled. We value their individuality and the contribution they make to the community. Our students are an asset and are at the heart of everything that we do.

Hedingham is a very caring, supportive and ordered environment that allows us to have high expectations of achievement and excellence. Our students are encouraged to work hard, study independently and to take pride in their achievements and the values of their school.

We aim to broaden the horizons of our students and to personalise their learning. We are committed to utilising the latest technologies and learning and teaching strategies so that our students are skilled and confident citizens prepared for the opportunities and challenge of an increasingly complex world.

Much of our success is due to a high level of parental confidence and trust established over the years. This website is designed to let you explore the type of school we are.

EDUCATION

THE CURRICULUM

We believe that students work best with others of a broadly similar academic ability. At Key Stage 3 Students are therefore taught most subjects in one of three bands according to their academic ability.
Tutor groups are made up of students from a range of academic abilities.

In years 7 & 8, students study either French or German as their first foreign language. From year 9 students who have shown particular enthusiasm and ability are able to take a second foreign language.

At Key Stage 4 Students study English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, RE, Citizenship and PE as core. Students can then choose from a wide range of GCSE subjects. The process of choosing a balanced curriculum takes the form of individual counselling by form tutors during year 9.

Students who stay on in our sixth form can take a range of AS and A2 level courses. All students are set targets and are closely monitored to ensure that they achieve the highest grades in external examinations.

HOMEWORK

Homework forms an essential part of students' learning. It has a number of purposes which consolidate and develop work done in the classroom:

- It can reinforce topics which are studied or serve as preparation for work which will follow

- Students have the opportunities to practise skills, concepts and techniques or complete specific projects

- They are also given the opportunity for research and for broadening and extending their horizons

- Above all, students have the responsibility to learn independently

- In Years 10 and 11, it may form part of GCSE assessed coursework

In Year 7, homework tasks are tightly structured with short-term goals; by Year 11, homework is more flexible and open-ended.
Deadlines are important as they help students manage their time and keep up-to-date with their work. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that homework is accurately recorded, completed and presented on time. Work should be of the highest possible quality. Homework rooms are available in lunchtime and after school.

SIXTH FORM

Most of our students continue their education post-16 with an increasing majority of year 11 students choosing to stay on at Hedingham Sixth Form.

Results in the sixth form are impressive and our sixth form students have an excellent record in gaining places at their chosen universities.

Hedingham School Sixth Form offers students a wide range of stimulating programmes comprising of AS A2 and vocational courses. We provide support structures and a learning environment that allow every student the opportunity to succeed.

Close links are maintained with the university sector and with employers offering further education and training. Our students undertake a business and industry course, enterprise challenge, where they liaise with local businesses to solve real world problems.

Our Sixth form students provide good role models for the rest of the school. They exhibit positive attitudes and a strong sense of community.
