Henbury View was built in 1992 with spacious open plan teaching bases. With the national requirements for whole class teaching in Literacy and Numeracy the school has added glazed screens between the year groups but with the option of opening up specially designed doors to retain the advantages of the larger space. The reception children benefit from their own entrance, outside play area, and two large classroom areas with custom built imaginative play areas and toilet facilities.

The teaching areas are designed in an octagonal shape around a central courtyard which can be accessed by all year groups. All classes have doors leading outside. The year one and two pupils have their own outside area enclosed with pencil fencing.

Aims

Our aims are:

  • To work in partnership with parents.

  • For every child to develop into a Confident, independent, and successful learner who feels secure and valued.

  • To work towards preparing pupils for their life in the world so that children develop a knowledge of what will be expected of them; how they will be challenged, and what they are capable of.

Together we work towards our aims by:

  • Creating a welcoming, bright and stimulating learning environment.

  • Developing a school climate that celebrates diversity of race, culture, gender and ability.

  • Fostering attitudes such as persistence, resourcefulness, resilience and reflectiveness. We encourage the development of life long learning skills.

  • Offering an exciting and challenging curriculum that provides rich learning experiences through carefully planned activities led by the National Curriculum.

  • Using a good behaviour code, positive role models and rewards for effort and achievements.

  • Supporting pupils to have a strong belief in themselves and in their abilities and a positive regard for others.

  • Motivating children and setting high expectations in order for them to achieve their personal best!

  • Encouraging the children to care for their school, their local community, even extending out to include the global community.

Through working towards our aims, in this way, we strive to support children in achieving the highest standards of which they are capable, to be celebrated by all.

The Curriculum

The National Curriculum is made up of:

  • The Foundation stage- 3-5 year olds

  • Key stage 1 (KS 1)

    • Year 1 who are 5-6 year olds

    • Year 2 who are 6-7 year olds

  • Key stage 2 (KS 2)

    • Year 3 who are 7-8 year olds

    • Year 4 who are 8-9 year olds

  • Key stage 2 continues into Middle School with Years 5 and 6.

The National Curriculum is taught following the programmes of study for each subject :-
Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Information Communication Technology, Religious Education.

Foundation Subjects: Geography, History, Physical Education, Art, Music, Design Technology, Personal, Social and Health Education.

The Early Years Foundation stage curriculum underpins all the child's future learning. It is carefully structured, with three main aims:

  • Provision for the different starting points of each child.

  • Planning for relevant and appropriate content that builds on what the children can already do.

  • Well planned purposeful activities that provides opportunities for teaching and learning, both indoors and out.

The Foundation stage curriculum is organised into six areas of learning:

  • Personal, social and emotional development.

  • Communication, language and literacy.

  • Mathematical development.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the world.

  • Physical development.

  • Creative development.

The early learning goals establish expectations for most children, within the six areas of learning, to be reached by the end of the foundation stage. Teachers identify progress through the 'stepping stones'.

Statement of Special Educational Needs

This may be necessary for a very few children. This is produced after full consultation with a range of specialist professionals with the full agreement of the parents, to meet the particular needs of that child. It is reviewed on an annual basis with a view to amending or withdrawing it as soon as possible. This would represent success for that child, in accessing the full range of the curriculum, without special provision. As mainstream schools now have a policy of inclusion for all there will be a need for a tiny minority of pupils to retain their Statement.
