Appointment of Rector
Dr John Halliday has been appointed as the new Rector of the High School of Dundee and will take over in August 2008. Further information is available

Dr John Halliday has been appointed as the new Rector of the High School of Dundee. He will join the School from his current post at Headmaster of Albyn School in Aberdeen when Michael Duncan retires in August 2008.

Dr John Halliday

Dr Halliday was educated at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire and Exeter University where he gained an honours degree in German with Linguistics. He completed his doctorate at Cambridge in 1982.

Dr Halliday taught at a university in Germany before working as a translator there, and in the UK. He began his teaching career at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh in 1987 then moved to Sedbergh School in Cumbria where he was a housemaster and head of modern languages. Within 10 years he had been appointed Headmaster of Rannoch School, Kinloch Rannoch and later moved to Dollar Academy before joining Albyn School as Headmaster in 2002.

The new Rector's interests include rugby, cross country and athletics, music, politics and literature. He is an accomplished viola player and singer and is currently a member of the Con Anima Chamber Choir. He has been a member of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus.

Dr Halliday is married with three teenage children.

Admissions Criteria

Pupils are usually admitted to the School after an interview or test, which is done to gain a measure of potential, so that the School can judge how a child's individual needs can best be met in the context of our educational provision.

There are three principal stages for entry - Primary 1 (aged five years), Primary 6 (aged ten years) and Form1 (aged twelve years), although pupils may be admitted to any stage at any time provided vacancies exist.

Deadlines

Applications for entry in August 2008 should preferably be received by Friday 14 December 2007, since testing starts in January 2008. This applies for all entry stages in both Junior and Senior Schools.

Given the current high demand for places - particularly for the Junior School - we would strongly advise early application.

Applications for financial assistance, through the Bursary scheme, for session 2008/2009 have a strict deadline and must be received no later than Friday 14 December 2007.

Further Information
To find out more about applying for a place, please contact the Admissions Co-ordinator, Miss Hannah Hamilton on 44 (0)1382 202921, or email admissions@highschoolofdundee.co.uk .
