ABOUT US

High School of Dundee dates its origins back to the thirteenth century when the Abbot of Lindores was instructed to build a grammar school in the burgh of Dundee.

Over the centuries the School has evolved to meet the needs of many generations and continues to have a prominent role as Dundee's only independent school, contributing to the educational, sporting, cultural and economic life of the city. Throughout this long history links with the local community have been strong. True to its origins, the School has always achieved a diverse mix of pupils and the School remains committed to preserving this through its bursary scheme. Pupils are attracted from a wide geographical area including Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perthshire, with more than half the pupils travelling from beyond Dundee.

ETHOS

Traditional values of hard work, self-discipline and respect for others continue to shape our distinctive ethos. Every child has individual talents and unique potential and our entire educational process is based on the understanding that children need to have their potential recognised and nurtured. We are proud of the positive learning environment we have created, where every child can grow in confidence within stable and encouraging surroundings. Through partnership with parents we endeavour to encourage and motivate our pupils to be all they can be.

While traditional values prevail, the School is forward thinking, offering a progressive approach to education which integrates the most worthwhile and proven developments - academic, technological and pastoral. Care and welfare of pupils is something we take very seriously, with designated staff in both Junior and Senior Schools responsible for monitoring closely children's personal and social development, as well as their academic progress throughout their school career.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Taking those first steps into school is an important moment in your child's life.

So many opportunities for discovery and development lie ahead. At the High School we seek to provide a stimulating and enjoyable experience right from the start where the connection between leisure and learning is never lost.

The atmosphere of fun and enjoyment your child experiences is underpinned by a carefully planned structure with reading, writing and number skills being introduced through a range of activities. Creativity is nurtured and children are offered the benefits of an early start in Information Technology. In our safe hands, you can be sure your child will progress in confidence, setting the tone for success in the future.

SENIOR SCHOOL

In Forms 1 and 2 pupils study English, Mathematics, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Studies, Music, Art, Technology and Home Economics in common. French, German, Latin and Spanish are offered, and most pupils study two languages. Modules are taken in Classical Studies and Drama. Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies; Personal and Social Education; Physical Education and Games are part of the syllabus throughout Senior School.

In Forms 3 and 4 pupils begin to make subject choices. They study eight subjects, either at Standard Grade or Intermediate 2 level, and a wealth of subject combinations is offered from this stage onwards.

In Form 5 subjects are chosen allowing a greater specialisation, with Highers giving pupils new and more complex academic challenges. This is developed further in Sixth Year where students are prepared for the move into tertiary education and the world of work. Advanced Highers, Highers and other specialised courses, tailored to students' needs, are offered in Sixth Year.

SIXTH FORM

The sixth year curriculum is designed to prepare students for higher education and employment. A particularly wide range of subject options is available in this final year, many of which are taught in very small classes or on a one-to-one basis. Courses at Advanced Higher level are demanding, requiring a high level of commitment and independent study but they provide an excellent foundation for university undergraduate work. While encouraged to take responsibility for their own progress students are guided through university entrance procedures and prepared for interviews. Links with local universities and employers provide an added benefit for our students, helping them to remain focused on their future lives.

Sixth year is not just about hard work. We seek to provide a fulfilling and enjoyable experience, broadening students' outlook and experience and preparing them to leave as mature, confident and self-aware young adults with a strong sense of citizenship.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

Extra curricular activities are not "bolted on" to academic work but are integral to School life, being woven into the curriculum at every age and stage, and viewed as being as important as academic learning. Clubs and societies of all types flourish. Sports, music, debating, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Young Enterprise and the School's combined cadet force with its pipe band are particularly strong, contributing enormously to the life of the School. A rich choice of pursuits is available for all ages and we encourage all pupils to participate and do their best. Our co-curricular programme instills team spirit, dedication, personal challenge and, above all, enjoyment for those who participate.

Travel is also a regular feature of School life and pupils' experience is immeasurably widened by trips, excursions and exchanges organised throughout the year. Exchanges with European schools bring the study of languages to life and pupils enjoy and value the experience.
