Welcome to Hockley Primary School

The school was first as a board school in 1882, moving to a new building in main road in 1903. It made a more recent move in September 1983 to the present building on the Betts Farm Estate. A warm working atmosphere pervades the whole building.

It is very much a family school, parents, staff and governors all contribute to this atmosphere. You will be welcome here and staff are always ready to discuss your child’s development but there will be occasions when you will need to make an appointment to ensure sufficient time to discuss any particular subject.  Please do not think some things are too small to bother us about; if it affects your child’s confidence then it is important.

The school provides a balanced curriculum, in accordance with National Legislation, that will give your child the opportunity to develop and extend their particular abilities and strengths. We intend that each child will be literate and numerate at a level consistent with ability when the move is made to Secondary School.

We hope our web site helps to inform you as to the ethos, philosophies and priorities of our school. If you would like the opportunity of discussing anything with me or looking around the school, please contact me so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
Finally, may I remind you that parents are always welcome in the school and that the school’s success depends on a mutually supportive relationship between parents and staff.
Yours sincerely,

M.J. Jones

Headteacher

ADMISSIONS

We welcome all prospective parents to our school. If you are interested in sending your child to Hockley School, please feel free to make an appointment to view the school.  We are happy to arrange individual tours of our school, where you will be able to view children at work within their class bases.

For rising 5 children, we have two intakes during the year. The first being September for children with their fifth birthday falling before the end of February, our second intake join us in January. For all foundation stage children pre-visits are provided to enable your child to become familiar with their new teacher and our school setting. Each child will also be partnered with a year 6 buddy, who’s duty it will be to support your child during their first weeks at Hockley School.

Older children joining our school will be welcomed by their new friends following the strong family ethos that our school is known for.

CURRICULUM

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that covers all the requirements of the National Curriculum, giving the children the opportunities to develop and extend their particular abilities and strengths.

Organisation
Classes in our school are grouped into:

Reception
Year 1
Years 1/2
Years 3/4
Years 5/6

This vertical grouping structure has shown to encourage the older children in feelings of responsibility and progress and younger children in feelings of familiarity and confidence.

We endeavor to keep classes as small as possible giving the children the opportunity to receive more individual help and guidance, thus profiting their education.

Curriculum

At present, we have a rolling programme of themes for a two year period; the themes vary throughout the school dependent on the age of the children. (See curriculum maps)
Within the main themes, there is the flexibility to have a theme for a week or a day on something, which occurs in the world, or about an object, which a child brings into school.  We hope to provide planned activities to ensure progression but also the spontaneity, which encourages greater personal involvement from the children.

Arrangements for Special Educational Needs Provision

The school employs a special needs educational needs teacher (SENCO), for two and a half days a week.  The SENCO works with the class teachers to support the children within the classroom or in small groups outside the classroom, whichever is most beneficial for the children concerned.  She also supports staff by discussing the children’s difficulties and their progress with parents, psychologists and other appropriate bodies.

More Able Children

It is the aim of Hockley Primary School to provide teaching for the more able child that will develop their personality, skills, and abilities, intellectually and socially.

As a staff, we recognise that every child has the right to receive assistance to achieve his/her potential and by making learning challenging and enjoyable, we strive to do this.

The school recognises that talents can manifest themselves in various ways and values all talents equally.

Both of the above Policies are available on request from the school office.

Extra Curriculuar Activities

Sport:

At Hockley School we embrace sport with great enthusiasm. All children have the opportunity to partake in all types of sports, and we are proud of our successes at inter-schools and district level tournaments.  We run netball, football, rugby and athletics clubs that all have teams that represent the school.

Music:

Music is a particular strength at our school. Children are encouraged to start learning the play instruments as soon as they enter our school. From year 2 recorder lessons can be taken. This leads on to many children choosing to learn other instruments which go together to from our large school orchestra of which we are immensely proud. We participate in both infant and junior music festivals.
