Welcome to Homestead, we are a residential school for boys aged 13 to 19 with emotional, social and behavioural learning difficulties.  We offer a positive, safe and happy environment in which students can develop and grow into confident young adults.  Each boy is given the opportunity of fulfilling their true potential with our varied range of academic and vocational subjects.

The school is set in 12 acres of beautiful woodland countryside in the heart of rural Essex.  The 19th century Victorian building has been an educational centre for children with special needs since the nineteen forties and has an extensive range of facilities.

Use the tool bar above to navigate around this site and gain an in-depth view of life at Homestead School, its facilities,  the curriculum and students achievements.

Homestead provides a stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere in which effective learning flourishes.  We offer a broad educational programme which can be adapted to suit the individual needs of each student, depending on their overall needs and ability.  The school can accommodate up to 30 boarders and a further 15 day students.  Boarders are woken around 7.30pm for breakfast at 8.05am, with day students arriving by taxi in time for the start of the school day at 9am.  During the day students are taught in small groups of up to seven.  There is a twenty minute break in the morning where they can have a drink and a snack. Lunch is followed by half an hour recreational time and the school day ends at 3.25pm.  We offer a wide range of  optional activities for those students boarding.  Regular participation is encouraged, ensuring the boys occupy their spare time positively, enhance their social skills and enjoy themselves.

POST 16

The Post 16 Group, based in their own classroom separate from the main building, have an opportunity to develop the skills needed for adulthood.  Each student follows a curriculum tailored to their own particular needs and interests, with a chance to study GCSE, Numeracy, Literacy, Key Skills, ASDAN qualifications, and attend extended work experience placements.  Expectations of commitment and behaviour are required to make this best of the opportunities Post 16 offers, with educational targets set and explained upon entry.  Many students have the opportunity of receiving EMA money for satisfactory attendance.

BOARDING

As well as providing an excellent learning environment, Homestead offers a secure and happy home for up to 30 boarders.  Many students choose to board Monday to Friday, others only once or twice a week. We believe boarding, adds an enriching dimension to a student’s school experience and aim to create an atmosphere in which children can grow up with openness, tolerance and trust.

The boarding landings are designed to be a home from home, so students are encouraged to personalize their bedroom areas with their own belongings and expected to keep them tidy.  Students are also responsible for taking their clothes and bedding to the laundry. Each shared room is brightly decorated and fully equipped with Sky TV and storage facilities.  There are communal sitting and TV areas, as well as a small kitchen where students can make drinks and snacks.  Washing facilities consist of communal bathrooms, with washbasins, shower cubicles and separate rooms with baths.

The main emphasis of boarding is for the children to enjoy themselves and high levels of staffing means that a wide variety of activities can be offered in the evenings, ensuring the students occupy their spear time positively.  These change depending on the weather, the skills of the staff and the preference of the students.
