Welcome to the King Edward VI Aston school web site.

King Edward VI Aston School is a multi-ethnic, selective school for boys, being one of the seven schools, which make up the King Edward VI Foundation in Birmingham. The school has been designated a Specialist Sports College and we are proud of our outward looking approach which has resulted in us developing contacts at local, national and international level with many other schools and organisations.

We have the highest expectations of our students, not only in their academic performance, but in their commitment to extra curricular activities be it in sport, drama, music or wider community service. By the age of eighteen we expect all Aston students to be articulate, well educated young men, capable of independent thought with the confidence to face future challenges. In addition we expect students to leave Aston knowing the value of integrity and the importance of tolerance.

I hope you are able to find the information that you are looking for about the school however if you cannot please do not hesitate to contact us at enquiry@keaston.bham.sch.uk

GENERAL INFORMATION

King Edward VI Aston School is a selective school for boys and Sports College situated to the north of the city centre and is one of seven which makes up the Schools of King Edward VI Foundation in Birmingham. The Foundation dates from 1552, although Aston was established in 1883 and is still on its original site.

ADMISSIONS:
All places at King Edward VI Aston are FREE and admission to the school is solely on the basis of selection tests administered by the Foundation and held each November in the year prior to entry. (Details of the tests and an application form are available from the school or the Foundation Office). Aston draws its pupils from a wide geographical area and applications are very welcome whether from within or outside the Birmingham area.

Number of appeals - 11.
Number of successful appeals - 1.
Number of unsuccessful appeals - 10.

Students are also welcome in the sixth form on the basis of successful GCSE results and there are occasionally vacancies in years 8, 9 and 10.

Open day arrangements and dates are available from the school office and are usually advertised in the local press.

FACILITIES:
The original Victorian buildings have been extensively refurbished and recent additions to the school's facilities include:

  • Sports Hall opened in 1997
  • Music Suite opened in 1999
  • New Language Block consisting of six classrooms and a state of the art language laboratory opened in 2000.
  • New Drama Studio was completed in 2002
  • Video conferencing suite opened in 2002
  • New Sixth Form Centre opened in 2003
The next phase of the school's development will see further building to extend facilities for art, technology and science. The school has also invested heavily in new I.T. hardware, software, internet access and associated cabling throughout the school to provide the technology necessary for successful teaching and learning in the modern world.

SPECIALIST SPORTS COLLEGE STATUS:
In addition to being a selective and very academic school, King Edward VI Aston has been designated as a Specialist Sports College. This prestigious award and very generous sponsorship from Aston Villa Football Club have allowed the school to provide a mini sports hall and refurbished changing rooms at our playing fields in Trinity Road. The extra funding for the Sports College and these new facilities allows the school to expand further the joint activities already going on with the local community and neighbouring primary, secondary and special schools.

ADMISSIONS

Year 7
All applicants for a place in Year 7 at King Edward VI Aston School will need to complete a 'Grammar School of King Edward the Sixth' test registration form, available from the school or by post from the Admissions Officer, Schools of King Edward the Sixth Foundation Office, Edgbaston Park Road, Birmingham B15 2UD. Alternatively, you can apply on-line at www.kingedwardthesixth.org

All applicants, whether they live in Birmingham or not, will also need to complete their home Local Education Authority (LEA) preference form. Up to six schools can be named on this form in a ranked order of preference. It is important not just to write King Edward VI Schools as each of the King Edward VI Schools counts as a separate choice (Aston, Camp Hill, Handsworth or Five Ways). If a school is not listed on the LEA form you cannot be offered a place.

Only the LEA will know the rankings. Schools in Birmingham will not know whether applicants have ranked them first or last when making their offers.

In considering applications, all schools will apply their own admissions criteria. The Grammar Schools of King Edward VI only consider entrance test scores and rank children according to their test scores. Other schools may rank children on distance from the school to their applicant's home.

All rankings will be submitted to the LEA. If a child meets the criteria for two or more schools, the LEA will offer a place at the school ranked highest on the LEA form. Parents will only receive one offer.

If a grammar school is the most desired option, it should be named as the most preferred school/s on the LEA preference form. If a grammar school is put first on the LEA form, but a child is not successful in the entrance test, it will not put at risk the chance of being offered a place at any other school listed providing that the LEA has an equal preference system.

Sixth Form

Year 11 students will have a ‘Transition Interview’ with a senior member of staff in the spring term to discuss their post 16 education. The vast majority of Aston’s year 11 students will progress to our sixth form.

Minimum requirement for Aston’s sixth form is: seven GCSE subjects at grades A* to C, including Mathematics and English. In addition students require at least a B grade in any subject they intend to study in the sixth form. Students following the ‘dual award’ science course are required to achieve two A grades if they wish to study a science subject at A level.

External candidates

We welcome applications from ambitious students for places in our sixth form. Each year we enrol 20 – 25 students from schools throughout Birmingham and beyond. The basic requirements are the same as above, although there is considerable competition for places.

Important dates:

  • December 14th 2007 -     Sixth Form Prospectus Published.  Aston students will automatically receive a copy and will be briefed. External applicants should request a copy, which includes an application form, from the school office.
  • Sixth Form Open Evening  --  Thursday January 31st  --  6  00 pm start. Students and their families are invited to attend to be briefed on all aspects of sixth form provision and to attend presentations in academic departments. External applicants should attend this evening.
