Kingswood College of Arts was opened on 1st September 1999. It is an 11 – 16 college in the Bransholme area of Hull. The college is leading the regeneration of the local community with a number of innovative and imaginative schemes and is involving them in the life of the college in a significant number of ways.
The college is a major partner in the attempt to raise the self-esteem and aspirations of the area. The local community has responded in a very positive manner to the new college and parents and students have expressed increased confidence in the college.
There have been significant improvements in relation to examination results, which are predicting that over 50% of students will achieve 5 or more A* to C grades in 2006. At KS3 there is also a clear rising trend in achievement. In addition, attendance has improved dramatically to 92%.
Kingswood College of Arts has been designated as a specialist college in the Visual and Performing Arts and has a vision that sees the college as a centre of excellence that will raise the aspirations and expectations of the entire local community.
The college is currently involved in an exciting project with Sony, KIT, Sun Microsystems and the BBC, both to make more use of film within lessons and to allow students to access their work from school through their TV sets. This has been a great motivating factor for the students within the college. In tandem with the project, interactive whiteboards have been installed in a large number of areas, with more installations planned in 2006 and beyond. Staff have been provided with necessary training and are leading the way in the imaginative and stimulating use of these exciting classroom resources.

LEARNING CENTRE

KINGSWOOD COLLEGE OF ARTS SHOWS OFF ITS NEW COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE

The college’s Director of Resources, Tony Hammond, said, “I am delighted to see our plans becoming reality - on time and within budget - thanks to a positive working relationship with our architect, Tony Mercer, and the staff at Sangwin Ltd, the main contractor. Tony really understands what Kingswood is about and this is reflected in his design, which was inspired by Design and Technology students. As for Sangwin staff, they have done so much high quality work for us over the past few years, they are almost part of the furniture”.

Nicole Swallow, Headteacher, said “The college’s vision for the centre is based on the concept of lifelong learning and it is hoped that students, staff, parents, grandparents, community users and other friends of the college will learn along with and alongside one another. Like our theatre and gallery, the learning centre will be a whole community resource and help us spread the message that parents and the public are more than welcome at Kingswood”.

The college is encouraging representatives of local community groups to visit the centre to discuss how it might be used to support and enhance existing provision in the Bransholme and Kingswood area.
With effect from Monday 18 September 2006, the café’s opening times will be as follows:-

Mon to Thur – 9.00am – 4.00pm

Fri – 9.00am – 2.00pm

The change has been necessary to ensure the café remains viable.

Please remember that the café can be opened at other times for specific events, such as theatre productions, parents’ evenings and gallery events.
