Welcome

Welcome to Lambrook. Within this website we hope to share with you a flavour of our home, a modern-thinking, co-educational school, set in beautiful grounds in the Berkshire countryside.

Headmaster, James Barnes and his wife Elizabeth

There has been a school at Lambrook in Berkshire continuously since 1860. In 1997 it joined with Haileybury Junior School in nearby Windsor to become Lambrook Haileybury. Although we are close enough to London for pupils to come from there, the countryside setting allows us 43 acres of grounds and playing fields (which include a 9-hole golf course).

We are one of the best-resourced independent preparatory schools in the area. Since the merger we have been implementing a development plan and so far have completed a well-equipped Science and IT block, a new Pre Prep building, an all-weather pitch and a senior classroom block built round a refurbished squash court.

The school has high academic standards and is outstandingly successful at achieving places in your first-choice schools at Common Entrance. We also get excellent results at Key Stages I & II and at Scholarship level.

The children enjoy a full programme of academic work, opportunities for creative expression in music, drama and art and a wide variety of sports, each activity providing a happy balance to the others.

The main intake ages are 4 and 7, but entry can be considered at any age. Most of the children attend on a daily basis, but the school offers very flexible termly, weekly or occasional boarding arrangements.

When the children leave for their senior schools they are confident and well rounded, looking back on a rich and happy time here.

IMPORTANT

Academic

Classes are small, with never more than 18 pupils in a form in the prep school. In year 6 all the subjects are taught by specialists, so children get used to having a different teacher for every lesson.

The curriculum is broad, and includes English, Maths, French, Science, Latin, Greek, History, Geography, Religious Knowledge, Design Technology, ICT, Art, Citizenship and Music.

As a consequence of the high academic standards, our pupils have a record of great success in going on to the senior schools of their choice.

Music and Arts

The music department enjoys a high profile within the school. Every child has a music lesson as a class, and many of them have individual lessons as well. Currently tuition is given in trumpet, singing, saxophone, recorder, piano, oboe, guitar, flute and drums. We are always ready to consider catering for further instruments

The twenty five strong chapel choir sings at all our chapel services and gives occasional performances in public - there is a popular Christmas engagement at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and a magnificent School Christmas Carol Service held in Eton College Chapel.

Many of the children have done so well in music that they have won a number of music scholarships to their various senior schools.

Drama
There are at least three major theatrical performances each year, (often musicals) - the senior play, the middle school play and the junior farrago, and all the children are encouraged to join in.

Recent productions have been The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the pantomime Sleeping Beauty, Oliver! and Bugsy Malone.

The Pre Prep also put on three performances every year: two at Christmas and a final one for the Year 2s before their ascent into the prep school.

Art
Art lessons are really popular, and result in colourful displays of work all round the school. Educational trips to the major public art galleries in London are a regular class activity.

With the increasing popularity of ceramics we have purchased a new kiln, and we are very proud that one of our pupils was recently awarded an art scholarship to Charterhouse.

Why Boarding?

There is a thriving boarding community at Lambrook Haileybury. The boys and girls are cared for in cosy and happy surroundings in the two boarding houses, Lambrook and Westfield.

Boarding is offered to children from Years 3 to 8. Resident housemasters, housemistresses and matrons are responsible for the children's welfare in the evenings. We offer several boarding options:

Full boarding

Weekly boarding (Monday to Friday)

Flexible boarding (whatever you require)

There is also a bus service that runs in and out of London every weekend.

Boarding offers a complete educational experience. It combines the social, extra-curricular and academic aspects of school life in a way no other format can. The children become more responsible in their surroundings where they are able to organise their own free time constructively and use the full extent of the school’s facilities. This is overseen by the dedicated staff, most of whom live on site.

By living with children of their own age deep and long lasting friendships are made. It is possible for them to throw themselves into after-school activities without worrying if their parents can pick them up. They do not waste hours of the week on the school run. Doing their prep in the evenings at school, in a supervised and quiet environment, means they will be able to work without distractions. If they have trouble with their homework or have forgotten it, there is always a classmate or a teacher who can help.

Children choose to do ‘flexi-boarding’ because it fits in with sports, music or extra-curricular commitments. For some children and families, boarding dovetails conveniently with family commitments. The residential experience of regular flexi-boarding helps the transition to full time boarding.

Pre Prep

Pre Prep (ages 4+ to 7)

At Lambrook Haileybury School we aim to inspire every child to develop into a confident, well-educated and characterful individual with an enthusiasm for learning. We believe that children can benefit from schooling from the age of four, and they may enter the Pre Prep in the September following that birthday. There is generally only one intake a year.

We aim to nurture an individual’s talents and to develop an enquiring mind. The child’s desire to work and learn flourishes in our spacious, bright and imaginative classrooms with their stimulating activities.

Learning

The Pre Prep contributes the best elements of traditional teaching, placing strong emphasis on numeracy and literacy, strongly supported by a broad range of activities and subjects across the curriculum. This provides opportunities for all children to reach their full potential and experience a sense of achievement from an early age. This gives a very sound basis for continuing into the Junior School.

In addition to the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the children are taught History, Geography, French, Art and Design Technology (DT), Music, PE and Religious Education (RE). Class sizes are kept to a maximum of 18, which enables us to give your child a lot of individual attention.

As well as the class teacher and classroom assistant, each class benefits from specialist teachers for Physical Education (PE), Swimming, Music and French. This ensures that high standards of teaching are maintained in all the curriculum areas.

Culture

The Pre Prep is a caring society, based on Christian values. Other faiths are taken into consideration to give children an awareness of different cultures and enable them to grow up with non-stereotypical images of people around them.

Westfield Saplings Nursery

Westfield Saplings Nursery is for 3 and 4 year olds, located in Westfield House set in the beautiful grounds of Lambrook Haileybury School. Here we provide a safe, stimulating and caring environment for your child that promotes learning through play. We use a wide range of resources, and allow children to develop their social skills as they play alongside each other.

When your child starts Nursery, it is an important time for both of you. On this website we hope to explain a little about ourselves and perhaps answer some of your questions. You are always welcome to come in and chat to the staff and see what we have to offer.

Children

There is a maximum of 16 children per session. Our staff encourage, facilitate and support the children while they play, talk about their experiences and help them share their enjoyment with others, enabling the children to become more confident and independent.

Parents

We regard our relationship with parents as a partnership. Communication is very important and in everyone's best interests. Unless you wish to raise a matter of some urgency affecting the coming day, please talk to the staff after the session has ended rather than before, when we are busy with the children. There are parent-teacher meetings every term.

Staff

All staff are dedicated, caring and experienced. The Managers both hold Level 3 qualifications, and in line with school policy additional training is provided for staff to continue their professional development, keep up with new initiatives and consolidate their areas of expertise. Staff are trained in Health and Safety, Child Protection and First Aid. We comply with OFSTED'S staff/child ratio of 1:8.

Any parent or guest who has been fortunate to come to the school sports day with a picnic on a hot June day will know how lovely the grounds are. Now we have a large all-weather surface to play various games on, the facilities are quite outstanding. As well as the cricket and football pitches, we have a sports hall, tennis courts, nine-hole golf course, squash court and swimming pool.

In the prep school the boys play one term of soccer, one of rugby and one of cricket, and can also enjoy tennis, basketball, hockey, athletics, cross-country running, and judo.

The girls play netball and rounders, as well as PE, hockey, swimming, dance, athletics, judo and tennis.

In the Pre Prep children start playing most of the sports listed above, but in an appropriately gentler format.

Competitive fixtures are held with such schools as Bishopsgate, Caldicott, Crosfields, Eagle House, Elstree, Eton End, Hall Grove, Horris Hill, Hurst Lodge, Ludgrove, Moulsford, Papplewick, St George’s Windsor, St John’s Beaumont, St John’s on the Hill, Summer Fields, Sunningdale, Upton House, Woodcote House and several others.
