Longwick Church of England Combined School

Welcome to the web site of Longwick Church of England Combined School!

Longwick is a small Church of England school, and has a happy atmosphere derived from the mutual trust and respect which, rooted in Christian values, forms the basis of all the activity we undertake  together. Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit, participate and help in the day to day running of school life.

The school is an important part of Longwick village life and so we are gathering information to include in our Prospectus, such as details of Clubs and Organisations, to enable new members of the community to integrate successfully and feel at home quickly.

AIMS

The aims of the school are as follows:

  •  To provide a broad based, challenging and interesting curriculum within safe and pleasant surroundings.

  •  To allow children to develop at their own pace, physically, emotionally, socially, intellectually, aesthetically and spiritually.

  •  To help them develop lively and enquiring minds which will prepare them for adult life in the next century.

  •  To provide them with an interactive learning environment that they may learn to ask questions, seek answers and develop specific skills, concepts and attitudes.

  •  To enable children to become independent learners by developing strategies needed for enquiry.

  •  To help children develop self-respect and self-discipline through personal fulfilment where they take responsibility for their own actions and where they set themselves high standards and targets.

  •  To help them develop respect and tolerance of others and to appreciate the diversity of the world in which they live.

  •  To encourage children to recognise their place in the world and the interdependence of one group with another, whilst developing a sense of responsibility towards the environment and cultural heritage.

  •  To help children to develop spiritually, where awe and wonder is part of their daily lives and they learn to appreciate those things which are beyond materialist society.

These aims are achieved in a variety of ways including:

  •  A carefully planned and delivered curriculum.

  •  A positive attitude towards all children.

  •  A mutual respect for each other.

  •  A simple but effective system of discipline with only essential school rules.

  •  A strong co-operation between school and home and school and the community.

  •  Committed staff and Governors.

  •  A continuous cycle of improved resources, books and equipment.

  •  Provision of time to come together in groups and assemblies to reflect.

  •  Extra-curricular activities and teams to encourage working with others.

  •  Visits, trips and visiting speakers, artists and musicians.

HISTORY

A BRIEF HISTORY

A School in the village has existed for over a century, and almost certainly it was accommodated originally in a private house. In the middle of the nineteenth century this form of schooling was very common, but compared with the present day system it was little better than child-minding.

On the 7th June 1875, however, the first schoolroom proper was brought into use. It is now a Residential Home of the Elderly and is located at right angles to the main road near the War Memorial. Apart from offering schoolroom accommodation for, at its peak, over 100 children during the week, it also served as a Church on Sundays. The altar, which was screened from the remainder of the building, was located at the road end of the building. The connection with the Church is still maintained in that the School is a Church of England Controlled School.

Part of the present building – the First School classrooms and Technology Centre was opened as a complete 5 – 11 years school in 1966 when the number of children on roll was in the 50s and 60s. Since then the village has expanded quite dramatically and the 75-place school originally built became inadequate.

In the Autumn of 1977 an 18 month building programme was complete and the accommodation as you see it now became available.

The school now comprises of 6 classroom bases. The original hall is now a library. The area beyond this outside the present hall is used for a temporary classroom, and the hall is used for assembly and dining room.

Three further classrooms are based in the upper school around a shared practical area, which houses the kiln. There is also a small room, which is used for music tuition, a quiet withdrawal area, KS2 library and the television is housed there for use by all classes.

The school is set in large, flat grounds, which include an asphalt playground, large playing fields, a wild area and pond.

Access to the school is from the front or Dorrells Road gate. A safe path now exists from the recreation ground (Scout Hut) where parking is easier. Parking is a constant problem particularly at the start and end of the day. If it is necessary for parents to use the car please ensure you park safely and avoid blocking local residents in or out by parking across the drives.
