Welcome to Lorenden

About Lorenden

Lorenden is the leading Independent Preparatory school in the Swale Borough.

It is a small community of a hundred and twenty eager and happy children aged fom 3 to 11, their committed parents and a staff of dedicated, professional and inspiring teachers.

Most children join the school in Kindergarten (age 3) or Reception (age 4), but there are sometimes opportunities for entry into higher years.

Discover Lorenden

Lorenden Preparatory School is situated in the village of Painter's Forstal between Faversham and the North Downs and has been at its present site since 1993. It was set up as a charitable trust and is currently administered by a Board of Governors with Mrs Penny Tebbit as the Headteacher.

Lorenden is very much a rural school.  The school grounds form a well enclosed and safe playing area and offer the children one of the most beautiful playgrounds in Kent.  There is a pond and wildlife area set aside for nature studies.

Our academic record at Lorenden is excellent.  More than that, children leave Lorenden with a foundation of key life skills: enquiring, resourceful, self confident and able to work with others.

The schools aims are to:

  • develop and discover the gifts within each child
  • recognise and meet individual needs
  • develop a happy community based on mutal respect and consideration
  • provide a safe, healthy, caring environment to live and learn in
  • strive for excellence in all we do.

We endeavour to ensure that, when pupils transfer to their senior schools, they are not just thoroughly taught but also well educated.  The children are made aware of their heritage and responsibility for the preservation of the environment.  They are taught to show respect for all adults, each other and the school.  Self-discipline and self-reliance are considered essential.  The valuing of tradition gives a sense of continuity and stability.

At Lorenden all form teachers are Primary specialists dedicated to developing an innovative, broad and balanced curriculum.

As well as English and Mathematics, the following subjects are taught:  Science, Information Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, French, Current Affairs, Music, Religious and Physical Education.  Outings and visits are arranged to support topic areas.

Professionals are invited in to school to run art, drama and music workshops.  There is an annual residential holiday for Years 5 and 6.

Class violin tuition is timetabled for the Pre-Prep children and qualified musicians offer a range of extra instrumental lessons to all.

During their time here, pupils will visit museums, the theatre and a concert in London.  These visits teach appropriate behaviour in different social situations as well as broadening the children's horizons.

On registration, a fee of £50 is payable before the child's name is placed on the Waiting List.

When a place is offered, completion of the Form of Agreement and payment of a £200 deposit will secure it.

The deposit is returnable by deduction from the final account and will be forfeited if a pupil is withdrawn between the time of payment and the beginning of the pupil's first term.

Children enter our Kindergarten class in the term after their third birthday.

It is compulsory to attend five morning sessions per week: afternoon sessions are optional.

We recommend that the number of sessions are increased throughout the year as children who are able to attend full-time during the Summer term are gently prepared for full-time education in the September.

Entry to Reception is in the September after the child's fourth birthday.

    Pre-Prep Department

Occasional entry to the Pre-Prep is dependant on existing numbers and is at the discretion of the Head.

    Prep Department

Entry to the Prep Department (7-11 year olds) may be subject to an Entrance Test comprising Verbal/Non Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics: this to give us standardised scores that will give a projection of success at 11+.  Results are communicated to parents as soon as possible.

    Allocation of places

When allocating places, priority is given if there are siblings already at Lorenden.  When there is more than one child competing for a place in the Prep Department, priority will be given to the child with the highest marks in the Entrance Test.  Extenuating circumstances will always be considered.
