About Us

Mission Statement
Luckley-Oakfield School aims to provide a high quality education based on Christian principles.  Whilst individual academic skills are, of course, recognised and fostered, great emphasis is also placed upon the development of the whole personality.  Luckley offers every girl a rich range of opportunities through which to develop her self-confidence and adaptability.   Girls educated at Luckley will experience a curriculum rich in spiritual and moral values and enhanced by a cultural and physical dimension.  Luckley girls are well prepared for adult life in every respect.  High academic standards, together with excellent preparation for higher education and the world of work, are underpinned by an ethos of concern for others, unselfish attitudes and an awareness of the rights and duties of a good citizen.

Oakfield School, Kirby Lonsdale
A Little History
Luckley, founded in 1918, has always occupied its present site.  The main house, which dates from 1907, replaced Luckley Manor, an ancient property mentioned in the Domesday Book.  Oakfield School was established in the Lake District in 1895.  The two schools were amalgamated on the Wokingham site in 1959 as an independent educational trust regulated by the Charity Commissioners.

Luckley in the 21st Century
Today, the school is a thriving community of over 300 girls.   The elegance of the original buildings has been enhanced and complemented by sympathetic development of additional facilities.   Luckley's  staff are committed and caring for every individual, offering a wealth of experience and qualifications.

First Impressions
"When you come to Luckley you will probably be really nervous, worrying about everything, such as have you brought the right equipment, will you manage to find your way around the school?  will you make friends and will the teachers like you?  But, you really shouldn't worry - you will be fine and should be extremely excited!  You have to remember that there will be many other new girls that are all thinking the same as you.  So, relax, enjoy yourself and have loads of fun!"
(Year 8 student)

The following comments were made by Year 7 students on joining the school:

"The School makes you feel at home"

"The older girls were really nice from the start"

"There wasn't too much homework which I was dreading!"

"The school is really friendly"

"I felt welcomed by everyone at Luckley"

"One hundred percent better than my previous school"

SEN
Girls with mild learning difficulties are welcomed at Luckley.  We are particularly able to support students with dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Provision at Luckley includes spelling and reading clubs at lunchtime and after school for Year 7 and 8 pupils.  We also provide 1:1 support lessons (charged at the rate of £40 per hour).

Spelling and reading assessments are taken by all students on entry and action is taken according to results and past history of the individual.

For extra time to be given in exams, the student must have an educational psychologist's report which recommends the concession.  We are able to organise for a student to be assessed at school.

Parents are encouraged to communicate any concerns about progress and staff are happy to meet with parents when necessary.  Regular pastoral meetings are held so that staff teaching each year group can raise concerns and discuss strategies for helping individual pupils.

Personal, Social Education and Citizenship
There is a cross-curricular approach to Personal, Social Education and Citizenship.  Form tutors also discuss some of these issues with their tutor groups.

Towards the end of Key Stage 3, the girls are given advice concerning their choice of subjects for Key Stage 4, to ensure that they continue to follow a broad and balanced curriculum.

Please click on the relevant button below for full details of courses available at Luckley.

Luckley girls have a full range of educational visits to supplement their studies.  You will also gain an insight into career counselling at the school and details of our public examination results and University destinations.

Sixth Form
Cornish House is the focus of the sixth-form, providing a space for study and enjoyment of school life.  The purpose-built block consists of shared rooms for both boarders and day girls, a comfortable lounge area, conservatory with a pool table, computer suite, student kitchen, laundry and bathroom facilities.

Sixth-form library and careers resources are located on the mezzanine floor of the Jubilee Library which is set aside for the older girls to use for study and research.

Most students study 4 AS subjects in Year 12, continuing with 3 at A2 level in Year 13.  A wide range of courses are available.  Our careers advisor and subject staff provide help and advice on the best combination of subjects for girls to achieve their goals.  ICT skills and qualifications may be gained through 'workshop' sessions, including Word Processing qualifications.

Departments arrange attendance at academic lectures, conferences, theatre trips, study trips and socials.  Exchanges can be arranged for linguists and residential field study for geographers takes place.  Study trips abroad are arranged by numerous departments; previous locations have included Kenya, Paris, Florence, Berlin, Madrid and the Alps.

Introduction to Sixth Form
An Information Evening is held in the Autumn for pupils and their parents.  They are invited to discuss their choice of AS/A Levels with subject staff as well as have a tour of Cornish House.  Pupils then submit their application forms before Christmas.

Interviews
Pupils and parents are offered informal interviews early in the Spring Term.  The Headmistress and Head of Sixth Form discuss the girls' subject choices with reference to interests, aptitudes and possible career plans.

Induction
An Induction Course is held for prospective Sixth Form girls after the examination period in the Summer Term

Pastoral Care at Luckley

Luckley enjoys a reputation for high standards of pastoral care.  All girls have daily contact with their form tutor, who takes a close interest in their academic and social welfare.  Regular meetings with the Assistant Head provide a forum for all staff to discuss the individual progress of each girl.  Parents are welcomed into school to talk over any concerns which arise. Relationships with families are of uttermost importance and this is reflected in Luckley's approach to communicating with parents. The School sends communication home with the girls as well as using PARENTMAIL an email and text communication service.

Sixth Form students are also assigned to a form tutor who monitors their progress and gives them additional support necessary for the university application process and career choices.   There is a specialist careers advisor and library of careers resources.

Life Skills Programme
A comprehensive programme embracing citizenship and careers along with personal, social and health education (PSHE) is part of the core curriculum for Years 7 to 11, timetabled as 4U.  This is taught as a discrete subject with additional support from form tutors.  Jubilee library contains additional material that girls can access.  Outside speakers regularly complement the work of the Luckley staff.  Sixth Form provision remains under the direction of the Head of Sixth Form with support from tutors.

The 'House' System
There are four houses at Luckley:  Beatty (red), Nelson (blue), Drake (green), Jellicoe (yellow).

Luckley encourages team effort.   This encompasses the annual Christmas Cracker event, Sports Day, Swimming Gala, Junior and Senior Rounders, Tennis, Netball, Badminton, Hockey, House Music Festival.  Winners receive 'stars' towards the end of year House Cup and also go on a house outing to Thorpe Park at the end of the summer term.

Stars are awarded to gain house points for good work and being helpful, but equally they can be lost!

Social Events
Regular socials are organised throughout the School to which local boys schools are invited.   The socials normally take the form of a Disco, held in the Sports Hall.  Soft drinks and snacks are available to purchase.
Medical Care
Luckley has a well-equipped surgery and sanatorium run by two fully qualified Nursing Sisters, with 24 hour medical cover available, as well as ready access to the school medical officer.

There is a termly charge for textiles and food technology, arts and crafts.  Insurance for the loss, theft, or damage to a pupil's personal possessions whilst at school remain the parents responsibility.

Pupils sometimes need to purchase personal materials and their own texts, which they can annotate for examination purposes.

A £600 deposit becomes payable once a place is offered, and in addition, for a girl whose parents are domiciled overseas, a further £500 is required.  These deposits will be set against the final term's disbursements, and in the case of an overseas deposit, refunded when the parents are domiciled in the UK.

Fees will be chargeable for extra subjects and one term's written notice is required to terminate lessons.  There are approximately 10 lessons per term.  Peripatetic teachers may teach some of these extra subjects, and will submit their own bills which should be paid directly to them.
