Welcome from the Principal

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to our School.  We hope you find it both interesting and informative, whether you are a present pupil, a past pupil, a parent, or simply a casual "surfer".

Markethill High is a well-established and successful school. We aim to provide a caring environment where pupils are encouraged to give of their best. It would be our belief that parents, pupils and teachers must work together to create this atmosphere.

This school has gone from strength to strength due to the support and confidence of the parents along with the high quality of education offered. This is demonstrated in the excellent results of our pupils in GCSE and other external examinations.  It is hoped that this Internet site can be used to showcase some of the excellent work that is going on at the school, and that pupils will take pride in seeing their work being made available to a much wider audience.

The school holds an annual Open Night, usually within the first two or three weeks of January, for parents and pupils of prospective students.  This is an opportunity for myself and the staff to meet with all those interested in becoming associated with the school community.  Regular contact with parents of existing pupils is maintained through regular Parents' Evenings, details of which can be found elsewhere on this site, and in termly or annual updates sent home with pupils.

S J Loughrey

Mission Statement

It is the purpose of this school to provide an educational environment suited to all of the pupils entrusted to its care. The school will seek to promote a caring supportive environment within a well ordered school community, where staff and pupils can work in an atmosphere of mutual respect, so that each and every pupil should achieve the highest level of intellectual, personal, physical and social development of which he or she is capable. We know that schools have a strong and lasting effect on those they serve: it is not only what we teach but how we teach that influences our pupils. We have the responsibility of creating within each individual an awareness of civic responsibilities and respect for authority, thus assisting pupils to become well integrated, disciplined personalities, capable of assuming an independent role in an ever changing society. All pupils need to feel that they have gained something worthwhile from school. We must therefore, achieve an atmosphere where all our pupils can enjoy their learning within a secure and stimulating environment.

To this end Markethill High aims to:

    • help each pupil achieve the highest level of academic, personal, physical, moral and social development of which he or she is capable;

    • provide a suitably caring, supportive environment within a well ordered and disciplined school community;

    • enter into partnership of mutual benefit with parents regarding the development and behaviour of their children;

    • provide pupils with experiences which will assist them in building self-esteem, thereby creating an awareness of civic responsibilities in order that they should make a positive contribution to society on completion of their secondary education.

Special Educational Needs

Pupils diagnosed as requiring additional support in English and Mathematics, will be placed in a small group. Learning Support Assistants have been appointed to these classes in years 8, 9 and 10. Provision is also made to withdraw pupils from class for individual tuition eg paired reading. Support for pupils in years 11 and 12 is allocated as appropriate. For further information on the School’s Special Educational Needs policy please contact the school office.
