This site is intended to give you an overall impression of who we are and what we do as a school. I hope that you enjoy your visit.
Mascalls is an oversubscribed comprehensive school in the heart of rural Kent with a large Sixth Form. We are committed to excellence in education and providing the widest possible experience for all our students, and to innovation and change in the constant quest for improvement. We are also fortunate to have wonderful new buildings and a lovely open campus in which our students can enjoy their learning.
Academic results are consistently high and in the last few years the school has been in the top 20% for 'value added'; that is the progress students make as they go through the school. We are a specialist school for Visual Arts and as a Visual Arts College we are able to offer the widest possible art and technology curriculum to all our students. Learning across the school is enhanced by the use of the latest technology in the classrooms and the encouragement of visual learning throughout the curriculum.
We are also committed to partnerships with parents. On entering the school each student is placed in a Learning Community. They and their siblings will remain in the same Learning Community throughout their time here. Each Learning Community has a fulltime non-teaching Pastoral Manager and full time PA who are always available to respond to parents’ requests or concerns. In addition, we operate an innovative arrangement, through this website, whereby parents have immediate online access to information on their child’s attendance, academic performance and behaviour.

| Mascalls is an 11-18 fully comprehensive day school with a large Sixth Form. It has a maximum annual intake of 240 boys and girls and is over-subscribed. Courses of study are provided according to individual needs for the GCSE examination and at GCE A Level, A/S Level and GNVQ (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced) leading to admission to Universities, including Oxbridge or specialist professional training.
Students are admitted in accordance with the Governing Body's publicised admissions procedure, details of which are available from the school, as is the admission form. Details and dates for the procedure are published annually.
Mascalls is normally the nearest appropriate school for pupils of all abilities living in Brenchley, Matfield, Capel, Five Oak Green, East Peckham, Horsmonden, Lamberhurst, Yalding and Paddock Wood.
Parents living in these areas whose children attend either their local County primary school or independent schools and who wish to apply for a place at Mascalls should contact enquiries@mascalls.kent.sch.uk. Pupils in other areas may also seek admission to the school.
Attention is drawn to the County Council's arrangements for help with travel. Offers of places will be sent to a maximum of 240 applicants. In recent years the average number of applications has been in excess of this figure. |

Our curriculum aims to provide the broadest possible range of opportunities for our students and to ensure that the subjects taught and the way they are taught are relevant to the needs, learning styles and aptitudes of all students.We regard the ability to access and use information and data using communication technology as a key skill for the 21st century and all students will have the opportunity to develop their skills throughout their time at Mascalls.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)
Mascalls has a unique curriculum in Key Stage 3, one which offers a challenge to the most able students and additional support to those who require it.We also aim to allow students to discover and develop their emerging talents in sport and the arts, both the performing and visual arts and to maximise their ability to use ICT effectively.The most able students follow a curriculum that includes two modern languages Students who would benefit from additional teaching in English, Mathematics and Science, study only one modern language.This gives all students the best opportunity to fulfil their potential in Key Stage 4.
Pupils are setted according to ability in almost all subjects within those two groups. This enables those who are the most able in a particular subject to follow an accelerated programme and possibly take some GCSEs and SATS early. It also allows additional classroom support to be focused on those who need it most. Pupils’ progress is constantly monitored and pupils may change set when their subject teacher feels that it is appropriate.
Physical Education is taught in single sex groups.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
The Key Stage 4 curriculum is designed to offer the maximum choice to students and to be flexible enough to meet the needs of all.The most able will study up to 12 subjects and may well take public examinations early or follow others in less than the usual amount of time. In addition to traditional GCSEs, a range of vocational GCSEs is available and, for some students, an innovative work-related curriculum which combines school-based study with work experience and vocational courses at West Kent College, will be on offer. Students will be set according to ability in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Modern Languages and in other subjects where the option blocks and numbers permit. |

Students can choose from rich and varied programme of extra-curricular activities and the number of students who participate in them is a strong feature of the school. We expect every student to take part in at least one activity, although many take part in a wide range of activities. Most activities take place in our extended lunch hour and this enables students who travel to and from school by public transport to be involved with the whole range of activities on offer.a
The performing arts, Music, Drama and Dance flourish in the school. There are weekly clubs and several school productions each year, some involving students who are studying these subjects at GCSE or A level and others involving students of all ages. Rehearsals take place at lunch times, although a commitment to after school and weekend rehearsals may be necessary. Individual music tuition is provided and there are several musical ensembles and choirs.
As a specialist visual arts school we run an extensive lunchtime and out-of-hours programme in this area as well as Saturday morning master classes for the gifted and talented. Most subject areas extend their work into the extra-curricular field and many run lunchtime workshops.
There is an opportunity for every child to go on a residential trip in Year 7 and there are trips to Germany and to France, Spain for language learning and in the Sixth Form further afield. Recent trips have taken students to Zambia, South Africa, New York, Venice and the Aeolian Islands.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is flourishing in the school and there is also a thriving Christian union. |

Most pupils carry on their studies into the Sixth Form which, with around 200 students, is a thriving part of life at Mascalls. Each year a number of new students also join the school in Year 12. It is regarded as a centre of excellence of all kinds and, as such, provides both a focus and an example for the whole school. It is housed in attractive purpose built accommodation with its own ICT facility. It has an enviable record of placing students at leading universities, including Oxbridge and medical schools, as well as on highly competitive courses such as Physiotherapy, Drama, Music and English.
By the time they reach the sixth Form, students are expected to have acquired good independent study skills and have greater degree of freedom and autonomy. They are also expected to develop their leadership skills and provide leadership for the younger students, especially those within their Learning Community.
All pupils entering the Sixth Form are expected to attend an induction course at a university and follow full-time courses of study at Advanced level. The most able are expected to follow challenging courses of 4 or 5 subjects and all students are expected to enhance their key skills during their time in the Sixth Form and follow a General Studies course.
In addition to the formal programme of study there is an extensive enrichment programme of visits, outside speakers and preparation for higher education and the world of work and independent living.
Most students will proceed to university and many will take a gap year either to travel or to gain additional experience working with voluntary organisations. Most will leave having made lasting and worthwhile friendships during their time at Mascalls. |
