Maxwelltown High School is a six year secondary school situated in the north-west of Dumfries. It primarily serves the Lochside and Lincluden areas of the town. We often receive visitors and parents to the school and many have commented on the friendly, productive but purposeful feeling about the school.

We work hard at achieving that because it is important to us to provide a caring and safe environment for your child.

The staff at Maxwelltown High School are well-qualified, skilled teachers who work hard to provide a high quality service for everybody that they teach.

We offer a good range of Higher and Standard Grade, Advanced Higher and Intermediate 1 and 2 courses. Students from this school go into employment, training, Further and Higher Education. In addition, staff voluntarily run a range of extra-curricular activities.

Our pupil monitoring system has undergone a significant upgrade over the last few months. The system can now be used to collate information to provide report cards for every pupil. This will provide a consistent style for reporting to parents and reduce administration time.

The system is also capable of emailing report cards to parents and we will investigate the feasibility of this in the coming months.

Pupils can access their individualised reports via the school network. The information available includes reports on overall performance in class and their progress towards their target grades.

S2 Reports were issued in January and S3-6 Reports will be ready for distribution in mid February.

Our Academic Mentoring system is now fully operational Pupils are currently being interviewed on an individual basis by their academic mentor.

Interviews will typically last for 15-20 minutes per pupil. Mentors will discuss with pupils their current progress compared to their target grades, overall perfromance in class and future educational/career aspirations.

Informal feedback from staff and pupils has been very positive.

Kirkcudbright Academy is also very interested in our system and a 'reduced' version has been implemented there. Several other schools in Dumfries and Galloway have also asked for demonstrations and are very impressed with what they have seen.

Maxwelltown High School has enjoyed supporting numerous probationer teachers over the last four years.

During this time we have had probationer teachers in English (2), Mathematics, Drama (2), Religious Education and Physical Education.

Most of these probationers have been offered the opportunity to take up full time permanent posts in the school.

Over the next four to six weeks pupils in S2-S5 will be completing Option Choice forms for next session.

S2 pupils will meet with their Pupil Support teacher and parents / carers will be invited to attend this meeting.

S3-S5 will be issued with forms during their Social Education classes and should return completed forms as soon as possible.
