I hope that you find this interesting and that it provides easy access to the information you require. Please let us know if you feel there is further material you would wish to see or if you have any other ideas, which would help us to develop the site.

I am extremely proud of Mayflower High School and all that we achieve. I believe that our success is a result of the excellent partnership that exists between our students, staff, parents, governors and the local community. This partnership ensures that the very best quality of education is provided at Mayflower. We are a large successful school, we focus on the individual and are committed to their well being and success in all spheres of life.

Our recent designation as a Science Specialist College has ensured that the school will be at the forefront of curriculum developments in these two significant curricular areas. In addition to the impact this will have across all subject areas within our school, we intend that this development will be shared with the schools in the Billericay area and also our local community.

Mrs L.E. Bamford
Headteacher

FACULTIES

SIXTH FORM

The Sixth Form at Mayflower High school is open to all who wish to attend it, subject to high standards of behaviour, effort, attendance and meeting the entry criteria for specific courses. Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and schools, and we provide opportunities for the full ability range. We are proud of our facilities and reputation and an exciting building programme in recent years has created re-fitted specialist teaching areas in Mathematics and Science.

The school has a long established history of Sixth Form teaching. Just as we embrace change and innovation, we take pride in the traditions and achievements of the past. Our track record and our pioneering spirit have been recognised in our status as a Science College and achievement awards together with successful inspections have been a feature of further recognition of Mayflower’s success.

Our Sixth Form offers a wide range of courses in academic and Vocational areas. Entry criteria differ, depending on the course chosen. For Advanced Level courses we would expect candidates to have achieved a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade C including normally a grade B (or for some subjects a grade C) in any subject that you wish to take. Other courses leading to nationally recognised qualifications are also available, for example, BTec and ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence). In this way we aim to provide our Sixth Formers with a flexible choice and the broadest possible education.

We are normally able to accommodate most combinations of choices. Arts, Science, Social Science and Languages can all be combined. Individual students are able to follow the courses best suited to their needs, interests and talents.

The school’s Sixth Form Centre allows students to develop their own interests and aptitudes in an environment that encourages self-discipline and personal organisation. Students are treated as young adults with privileges and responsibilities but can still draw on a strong system of pastoral support to guide them through their education.

 The School Community and Beyond

Sixth Formers are an important part of the whole school community here at Mayflower, and challenging opportunities exist for involvement in many areas of school life. The prestigious positions of Head Boy and Girl, membership in the Sixth Form Council, peer mentoring under our Educational Support System and close links with Millennium Volunteers all offer the possibility for our students to assume responsibility, develop leadership skills, show initiative and provide a service to the school and wider community. As such, they are important aids to personal development outside the purely academic side of school life and offer rewarding ways to extend a student’s experience of the Sixth Form.

Mayflower Sixth Form is a chance to make new friends. One focus is the Sixth Form Lounge but there is also a whole host of formal and informal events, organised by the Sixth Form Council, such as the Christmas Dance and Leavers’ Ball. Our vertical tutor group system also encourages easy mixing whatever the background or former school of students. We are keen to promote social activity and interaction as important facets to Sixth Form life.

Sixth Formers can take part in numerous individual and team sports. Our range of sporting activities and fixtures was highlighted in our Sportsmark Award, and being a community school means that there are a range of extra-curricular activities available on the school site.

Life after Sixth Form

Sixth Formers from Mayflower succeed. Every year a high proportion of our Upper Sixth move on to further and higher education at universities and colleges throughout the country. When making applications to further their education or apply for employment, our dedicated team of tutors and Sixth Form staff are committed to providing an excellent service of support and guidance for our students. We maintain close links with our former students, and are proud of their achievements. In short, at Mayflower Sixth Form we expect all of our students to meet reach their full potential.
