Welcome to Meadowgate School

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Meadowgate is a mixed special day school maintained by Cambridgeshire County Council. We offer education to children with either moderate or severe learning difficulties. Meadowgate pupils may join us from the age of two and stay up to the age of nineteen.

AIMS OF THE SCHOOL

The school aims to provide an environment that fosters high self esteem, together with an educational training and development experience. This encourages all members of school to use their abilities to gain skills and knowledge and to take full advantage of both work and leisure thus preparing them for the outside world.

PRIMARY

he Primary area at Meadowgate is comprised of 3 mixed ability classes named after small birds:

Wrens, Robins and Swallows

This year children from Wisbech primary schools have come to join some of our lessons and some of our students attend sessions at Nene and Ramnoth schools

We enjoy getting together for weekly primary assemblies and each class will perform in a special assembly once a term

SECONDARY

he secondary area at Meadowgate School is comprised of four teaching groups:

Kestrels - Year Seven and Year Eight students

Falcons - Year Nine students

Hawks - Year Ten students

Eagles/Leavers- Year Eleven students who will leave at the end of the year also Post 16 students who have chosen to stay on at school

The sizes of the groups vary from 17 to 21 students. The teams of staff are made up of two teachers and at least three Teaching Assistants who plan, administer and evaluate Literacy, Numeracy and PHSE sessions. Other subjects are taught by specialist teachers throughout Secondary School.

The students benefit greatly from the supportive, caring and highly motivating attitude and commitment of the teams and the enthusiasm generated by the groups of staff who not only bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the normal curriculum but who constantly strive to offer additional activities, events, trips and residential experiences for the students. High expectations from staff also help to ensure an excellent work-rate and good standards of behaviour from the students.

INCLUSION

Nine mainstream and special schools in Wisbech and the surrounding area have joined together to run a project that gives pupils opportunities for inclusion. The schools involved are Nene Infants, Ramnoth Junior, Orchards J.M.I., Clarkson Infants,  Peckover J.M.I., Elm J.M.I., Beaupre J.M.I., Neale Wade Community College and Meadowgate. The agreed aims of are:

  • To encourage pupils to reach their full potential.
  • To ensure that all pupils have an educational experience that meets their needs.
  • To provide an opportunity for sharing expertise and training between schools.
  • To promote the idea of inclusive systems as part of the everyday experience for all.

The project started slowly in the Autumn Term of 2002 with three mainstream schools and the special school and has gradually developed.  Nearly forty pupils take part in inclusion sessions on a regular basis and occasional group sessions include many more.

The project is managed at Meadowgate School by an experienced retired special school head teacher and run by two Teaching Assistants. It is funded by money awarded to the school via a bid to the Standards Fund.

The schools identify a few pupils who they feel would benefit from an enhanced curriculum provided in another school. Parents are actively consulted and involved, there is regular liaison between them and the schools. Responsibility for the pupils’ individual programmes is undertaken by both schools.

Annual evaluation helps identify targets for the following year.  This has shown that the project is very well received and supported by our partnership schools.  School, staff and parents see Inclusion as a way to increase and develop new skills, self confidence and self-esteem for their children.

The project will continue to develop and provide exciting experiences for both pupils and staff in all the schools.
