WELCOME!!!

Our aim is to widen the horizons of young people through opportunity, challenge and achievement, and inspire in them an excitement for life-long learning.

Our school provides a safe, happy and orderly environment with a strong code of values.

Our staff have been praised by OSTED, and we have consistenheadtly achieved above average results in Maths, Science, and English.

Our specialist status as a Media Arts College means that the school is buzzing with creativity and innovation.

I hope that these web pages will give you insight into our learning community, and provide details on how you also can be involved more in the education of children.

Mrs Graham, Headteacher

Ethos

We aim to provide a secure background for each student so that, despite the fact we are a large school, we are a caring community in which each child matters. Through this process of valuing people as individuals, we encourage our students to be courteous, tolerant and considerate to others. Ultimately, we help them to become mature, thoughtful and questioning young people, able to adjust themselves socially and emotionally to society.

CURRICULUM

The School’s Curriculum embraces the aims of the National Curriculum in that it is balanced and broadly based and aims to:

• promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the students at the school and in society.
• prepare such students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

The school meets all the specific requirements of the National Curriculum. Students follow the statutory programmes of study in Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography, Design & Technology, Modern Languages, Art, Music, Personal, Vocational & Social Education (including citizenship), information technology and Physical Education. Religious Education courses are in line with the Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus.

Core Subjects (Compulsory)

English
Mathematics
Single Science
Physical Education
Personal Social and Vocational Education (which includes religious education and citizenship)

KS4

At keystage 4 we offer a curriculum with greater flexibility allowing students to choose to spend more time pursuing subjects in which they have a greater aptitude or are particularly interested in. Vocational courses are available in some specialisms like Information and Communications Technology, Constrcu tion and Engineering. For some students for whom a full range of academic GCSE’s would be inappropri ate, the national curriculum is disapplied and the school offers an “Awards” course where certificates in a wide range of activities are available. A programme of work placements may be negotiated where appropriate.

SIXTH FORM

Aims

The Sixth Form at Mill Hill is committed to supporting your achievements and building on your aspirations. We aim to:

Support the decision making process as students make their plans for Post-16 education

Support the development of independent study skills during the transition from GCSE to AS

Provide a caring and supportive school environment with a wide range of learning opportunities

Ensure effective links with Connexions staff and encourage work experience Post16
Support students when making job or course applications for higher education and preparing for interview

Encourage students to become involved within the school community through a variety of enrichment activities

Provide a tutorial programme that allows students to set targets to help support their progression, with regular monitoring of progress to provide both challenge and support.

Encourage student participation in the running of the Sixth Form and responsibility for their environment

Provide facilities to support learning such as the staffed Sixth Form Study Area which contains resources for study and career guidance, a computer room with Internet access, and the school library. In addition students may use the Sixth Form common room and kitchen for recreation.

Support the aims of the school by acting in accordance with the whole School Mission Statement and the Sixth Form Agreement

Enrichment

In addition to your academic studies our aim is to develop you as a well-rounded individual and thus support further your progression into H.E. and employment.

We are currently reviewing the vehicle for broadening the curriculum and more details will be available later in the academic year. We offer a structured guidance and support programme to provide career guidance and preparation for higher education. Opportunities are provided for students to attend open days, H.E. Conventions, as well as sessions provided by our Connexions advisor. Many students gain useful work experience that helps to support their future career choices. Extra help is given to students making applications to very competitive courses like medicine and Oxbridge, and the school is a member of a number of university school partnerships schemes which help to support applications to local universities such as Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield.

You will be asked to select from a range of enrichment opportunities in order to gain further skills and contribute to both the school and wider community. Such activities include participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Community Sports Leadership Award, development of key skills through the ASDAN certificate of personal effectiveness (level 3) and a wide range of music and drama activities. There are also numerous opportunities for students to support younger pupils through mentoring and buddy schemes in school and students involve themselves in voluntary work in the wider community raising substantial amounts of money for charitable causes. Sixth Form students are also encouraged to take on key leadership roles and participate in organising events such as the Sixth Form Prom.
