Moffats is a family-owned school that caters for the needs of boys and girls between the ages of four and thirteen.
Younger children start in Little Moffats, moving into the main school from age seven. Children aged upwards of seven generally join the main school directly.
For full details, please request our printed prospectus or arrange a visit to our school.
Full and weekly boarding is offered in the main school, and we provide extended hours of care before and after the school day for day pupils.
We teach in small classes, following the Common Entrance syllabus, preparing children for a wide range of senior schools. If children have special needs, we can often provide the help they need, as long as they can cope in the classroom.
The school is a community that encourages children to join in and play their part as members. All senior staff, including the headmaster Mark Daborn, are easily accessible to parents and to children.
Music and drama are part of daily life at Moffats, as are sport, which can include riding, and a wide range of activities.
The school is located in its own beautiful 100-acre estate in the south of rural Shropshire, within easy daily travelling distance of Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Kidderminster.
There is no entrance examination. Our Bursar, Julian Engleheart, can provide information on admissions, fees and awards.
Moffats delivers traditional high-quality education in small classes. The average class size is 12 pupils, so teachers can always explain work and discuss it with children, one-to-one.
Little Moffats prepares children for Moffats main school, welcoming children between the ages of four and seven. The uniquely attentive atmosphere forms very good learning habits in young children.
Little Moffats is not a play school, but is very much the junior section of Moffats. It is closely integrated with the main school.
Little Moffats welcomes children from the age of four to seven years, and is much more than a play school. Pupils are encouraged to achieve and to be proud of achieving. |
The Little Moffats Curriculum
Little Moffats seeks to introduce young children to elements of the curriculum used in the main school through activities and lessons that stimulate their interest.
Skills in reading, writing and working with numbers are developed, and each child is gently helped to adjust to school life, to enjoy widening horizons and to discover new interests and skills.
Individual music lessons, riding, ballet, tap and modern dance, and craft are among the popular optional extras on offer at Little Moffats.
The Little Moffats School Day
The Little Moffats day runs from 9.00am to 3.30pm, but not all children are old enough or ready to complete a full day. Part-time options are available: some children start at Little Moffats by coming for mornings only, from 9.00am to 12.30pm. After-school care is available every school day; other supervised care before or after school can easily be arranged and most individual requirements met.
Preparing for ‘big school’
The transition between Little Moffats and the main school is seamless, not least because Little Moffats pupils have access to the facilities of the main school for certain activities, and are regularly introduced to life in the main school.
At Little Moffats there is the option of joining in sport and activities with the smaller children from the main school. The youngest form at the main school joins the Little Moffats children in the school dining room.
Children can join the main school at any age from seven upwards, and the usual leaving age is 13+.
There is no formal entrance examination. For details of fees etc, see our Bursar’s Office, and if your child has special needs, please call us to discuss how we can help.
Moffats – main school curriculum
Moffats has made a positive choice not to follow the UK’s National Curriculum because we believe that the Common Entrance curriculum is a wider curriculum that serves children better.
Children who remain at Moffats until they are 13 enjoy stability in a familiar community environment at a time of life that can often be challenging. |
The curriculum includes: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Classical Civilisations, Computing/Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Current Affairs, English Language, English Literature, French, Geography, Greek, History, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Religious Studies and Sport.
Individual music lessons and tutoring in other subjects are available as optional extras.
Moffats – a passion for teaching
All teachers at Moffats teach subjects for which they have a personal passion. Children learn to appreciate the intrinsic value and purpose of subjects, not just what they need to know in order to pass exams.
Moffats – encouraging individual learning
At Moffats, children have the freedom to enquire, to investigate, to think flexibly and to solve problems. Sometimes they work individually, sometimes in groups, but always in small, mixed-ability classes in which whole-class teaching is combined with work appropriate to individual children’s abilities.
Moving on from Moffats – choosing the next school
Just as no two children are alike, there are great differences between senior schools. If our advice is asked, we can put at parents' disposal our vast experience of senior schools, together with our knowledge of the academic capability and other skills and interests of their child. |
