Pre-Prep School

Years 1 and 2

Year 1 children in the ICT Suite

For children aged 5-6 and 6-7, all day.

In Years 1 and 2 all children follow the requirements of the National Curriculum in subjects at Key Stage 1. The curriculum is designed to ensure excellent continuity and progression between the classes.

Detailed planning is kept by all teachers and shared with parents at the beginning of each term.

Each teacher is also responsible for one or two curriculum subjects and they carefully monitor learning, achievements and progression in Years 1 and 2 for their subject.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten class children

Kindergarten is for children of ages 3 - 4 for five mornings.

Whether children enter the Pre-Prep in Nursery, Kindergarten or the Reception class, they are taught according to the National Guidelines for the teaching of under 5s. This curriculum enables each child to make maximum progress towards the Early Learning Goals.

The Early Learning Goals have been set for children to achieve by the time they enter Year 1.

Kindergarten has two attractive classrooms on the ground floor. They also have access to the Food Technology Room, Chapel, swimming pool and exciting outdoor play areas.

All resources are looked after carefully and shared as appropriate. Children are taught to care for all the resources in school. Kindergarten children participate as fully as possible in the life of the Pre-Prep, taking part in Christmas concerts and other celebrations. They are carefully nurtured by qualified teachers and nursery nurses.  The ratio in our Kindergarten is one adult to 8 children.

Kindergarten children attend school for 5 mornings a week from 8.40 - 12.30pm.  The option of Afternoon Care is also available.

Nursery

Children in Nursery class

The Nursery for children of ages 2 to 3 is open five mornings per week and offers a secure and loving Christian environment with a wide range of activities, including painting, model making, drawing, singing and cooking.

The use of large outdoor play equipment and access to our beautiful grounds provides an ideal environment for our younger children to enjoy.

There are also many other opportunities to teach and care for the children. Our aim is to encourage the children to grow and develop in confidence in a happy and relaxed atmosphere where they can learn to play and co-operate in a group beyond the family. This provides an ideal foundation for their education and prepares them for their time in Kindergarten.

The children are cared for by a team of experienced Nursery Nurses. Morning sessions are held from 8.45am -12.15pm and each child should attend a minimum of two sessions per week.  The option of Afternoon Care is also available.

Reception

Reception class children

Reception is for children of ages 4 - 5, all day.

Children in the Reception class have three attractive, well-planned and carefully resourced classrooms and are taught by qualified teachers with the additional help of a classroom assistant or nursery nurse in each class.

All children are also able to use the gym at the Junior School, the swimming pool, Food Technology Room, Art Room, Chapel, the Activity Room and ICT Suite. They also use all the outdoor play areas.

Reception children attend school 5 days a week from 8.40 am to 3.20 pm.  Lunch is provided for Reception children.

After School care is also available.

Introduction to Prep School Curriculum

Also in this section:    Academic Structure

All pupils are encouraged to strive for academic excellence. The School's independent status allows its experienced staff to maintain flexibility to choose new developments in education while preserving traditional standards.

The teaching standards are designed to exceed Senior School entrance requirements and give each child a breadth of knowledge. All pupils sit the Common Entrance Examination, while some are prepared for scholarship examinations. Traditionally, the majority of the pupils proceed to Monkton Senior School, while others secure entry to a wide variety of well-known independent schools.

The School is well able to cater for the needs of children with moderate learning difficulties. Individual needs are assessed and suitable programmes designed to afford maximum support.

  • Geography

Special Needs

Mrs Stafford with three of her pupils

In 1978, Warnock stated that "the purpose of education for all children is the same...but the help individual children will need will be different".

Meeting special needs can be accomplished through the provision of a special means of access to the curriculum, and by attention to the social structure and emotional climate in which education takes place.

We strive to identify children with special needs as early as possible so that we can design an education provision which suits them from day one. Through the use of Individual Education Plans, we effect a programme of support, referral and teaching techniques that allow children to receive the help they need quickly and effectively. These plans are developed in consultation with the child's parents, tutor and teachers.

For some, the help given is on an individual basis. For others, group work is more appropriate. We are keen to provide in-class support where possible, allowing children to take a full part in the normal day-to-day lessons alongside their peers. We liaise with outside agencies when necessary to ensure that help given is appropriate. The staff in the department are well-qualified and dedicated teachers who specialise in Learning Support.

Although we do not have an entrance qualification to the School, we do assess children before they come to Monkton Prep School to ensure that we can provide the education that they need.

The department is run by Sue Stafford.

Senior School

Curriculum Overview

As Monkton's outstanding exam results and more importantly, value added results, over the last five years demonstrate, fulfilling academic potential is our key priority. Our pupils work hard and are well motivated, being supported and encouraged through the care and enthusiasm of our teachers, who work hard to offer lessons that are lively and enjoyable, as well as rigorous and demanding. The small class sizes, that predominate in all year groups, allow pupils to receive a great deal of personal attention. Strategies for supporting gifted and talented pupils are in place and are continually being updated and extended. There is also a dedicated centre which provides for individual pupils who need Learning Support or teaching in English as a Second Language.

Years 7 to 11

We aim to offer our students a broad curriculum in the lower year groups to enable them to keep options open for as long as possible, particularly for selection of subjects to GCSE. This process also ensures that pupils receive a broad education of the world around them.  The curriculum reflects the spirit and fundamental goals of the National Curriculum in placing its focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and the Sciences while allowing wider options suited to individual need.

In addition to the core subjects, most pupils take four further GCSE's selected from a range of options.  Personal and Social Education, Physical Education and Religious Education are included in the curriculum.

Decisions about the subjects an individual pupil should take are made only after extensive consultation with Tutors and parents.

Years 12 and 13  - Sixth Form

Most pupils stay on for A levels.  Great care is taken by Tutors, Houseparents and other careers staff, with the help of Careers Aptitude Tests and in consultation with parents, in advising pupils over the choice of AS and A level subjects.  Twenty subjects are offered at A level.  In addition to their A level subjects, all pupils follow an enrichment programme which includes an AS Critical Thinking course as well as an exciting series of lectures given by some highly eminent speakers.

Please contact the Director of Studies, Mr J B Morley for more information about any aspect of the curriculum.

Boarding & Pastoral Care

What the students say they like most about being at Monkton

"You're always with your friends"

Boarding is at the very heart of Monkton and the unique atmosphere of the School is enjoyed by boarders and day pupils alike. All the Houses reflect the spirit and ethos of the School but each exudes its own personality generated by its pupils, Houseparents and staff as well as by its size, individual geography and location within the School site.

The Houses serve as home to the pupils while they are at the School. Whether sharing or in separate rooms, pupils develop a real sense of community.  The contacts and camaraderie that build up give the boys and girls a foundation of friendships for life as well as a wider understanding, respect and tolerance for all those around them.

"My House is my second home"

We have 7 boarding Houses spread around the whole School site: one mixed junior House for 11 and 12 year olds and 6 senior Houses for 13 - 18/19 year olds: 4 boys' and 2 girls'. Unusually, each House is run by a Houseparent couple, all of whom have families of their own. The Houseparents are supported by House teams of tutors. Together they are responsible for the well-being of their pupils to ensure that each individual's needs are being met. In addition the senior Houses each have a Head of House and prefect team taken from Year 13.

Boarding gives pupils the opportunity to develop confidence, social skills, sensitivity, responsibility, self-motivation and self-organisation as well as the chance to have a great time with their friends, tutors and teachers. Meeting with friends and staff out of the work context, in a less formal environment, allows the pupils to develop deeper and more valuable relationships.

Being full time on site enables the pupils to make the most of all the School facilities, be it the art room, music practice rooms, basketball court or many others. After Saturday morning lessons and regular sports fixtures in the afternoon, pupils are free to relax, go out with friends or take advantage of the full programme of school weekend activities. These activities cover a wide range of interests from cinema trips, discos, themed parties and barbecues to friendly inter-House quizzes and tournaments in a variety of sports.

Extract from the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) of Monkton Combe Senior School Boarding Provision - 2005

The strong Christian foundations of the School help account for the warm friendly atmosphere, strong pastoral support and high standards of behaviour noticed so often by those who visit.  The School has a lively and varied Christian life.  The more formal aspects centre on the Chapel, which lies literally and symbolically at the heart of the community.

What the School does well in boarding welfare.

The statement of the school's boarding principles and practice was seen to exceed the required standard.  The School is exceptionally successful in supporting good behaviour across all age groups.  Bullying behaviour is practically non-existent.

Boarders' health and welfare needs are exceptionally well looked after.  The medical centre provides an effective and sought after service.

A very experienced and dedicated team implements the organisation and management of boarding.

Conclusions and overview of findings on boarding welfare.

The school exceeds the requirements and recommendations of the Boarding Schools National Minimum Standards in most of the key areas.

The Inspectors were firmly of the view that Monkton Combe Senior School provides a good boarding experience for the young people accommodated.  All of the boarders spoken with felt safe and happy at the school.

International Students

International students at Monkton

About 1 pupil in every 10 does not live in Great Britain.  They come from many different countries including China, Japan, Korea, Kenya and other African and European countries.

The teacher with special responsibility for foreign students is Mr James Bradby who lives with his family in the village of Monkton Combe.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SOCIETY
The ISS is led by an elected student committee and overseen by the International Student Officer. The highlight of the year is the International Evening, when students prepare food from their own countries and present songs, games, drama, language teaching and other entertainment.
