WELCOME!!!

The school opened in 1875 as The Girls and Mixed Infants School. There have been many alterations to the school’s buildings since that time, with major additions in 1963 and 2001 aimed at expanding and improving the facilities that the school has to offer. We are about to enter a very exciting period in the life of the school as we are expecting to move to a brand new purpose built school in 2007.

The school serves Moretonhampstead and surrounding area, including the villages of Manaton, and North Bovey. Further information about the history of the school can be found in George Friend’s book: Memories of Moretonhampstead, available at school.

AIMS

It is the aim of our school to:

  • Provide a safe, attractive and stimulating environment in which children in our care can learn the skills needed to enable them to reach their full potential.
  • Teach effectively all elements of the National Curriculum and Religious Education with particular emphasis in the early years on basic skills and understanding
  • Develop in each child the skills and attitudes necessary for them to take full advantage of the broad and balanced curriculum we offer.
  • Help each child develop a belief in themselves and their individual worth and provide opportunities for them to learn the value of co-operation with others and to have respect and consideration for others regardless of age, race, belief or background.
  • Prepare children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of their future education and adult life.
  • Encourage parents to view the school and themselves as partners in their child’s education and to involve them in the work of the school to the advantage of all the children.
  • Make a positive contribution to the life of the community and to involve the community in the support and education of the children who are at its heart and are its future.

CURRICULUM

The Local Education Authority publishes statements setting out its policy on the type of curriculum to be provided within its schools. Moretonhampstead School uses this as a basis to match its own aims, keeping in line with the legal requirements of the National Curriculum specified in the Education Reform Act (1988). All children are taught the three core subjects of Literacy, Numeracy and Science together with further foundation subjects of Information Communication Technology, History, Geography, Design Technology, Music, Art and P.E. We have a nine-station computer suite and each classroom is equipped with its own computer terminal. Each terminal has filtered access to the Internet and a range of software to help develop children’s work in all areas of the curriculum. In implementing this curriculum a broad spectrum of teaching styles and methods are used to ensure children have full access to the curriculum.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY CLUB. Outdoor activity clubs run throughout the year with a range of activities from Skiing at the dry ski slope in Plymouth to Caving at Buckfastleigh. All activities are lead by fully qualified instructors.

FOOTBALL; NETBALL; CROSS-COUNTRY AND ATHLETICS. School teams regularly represent Moretonhampstead in inter-school and area sport events.

FRENCH. The French club is organised by a qualified French teacher, who bills parents directly for the tuition fees, which can also be paid weekly.

MUSIC. The school has a very strong tradition of music and is one of only a few schools in Devon to have a 40-piece orchestra. We are able to offer interested pupils the opportunity to participate in a number of musical activities. These include; weekly violin, guitar and singing lessons, plus tuition in piano, flute, clarinet and saxophone.
