Welcome to Newtown Primary School!

We are a small school compared with other schools in Exeter and see this as an advantage as the staff can really get to know the children.

The school became a primary school in September 2005. We admitted pupils into Year 4 in 2005. Our current number on roll is 130, including 19 children in our Speech and Language Centre. Many of these children are out of the schools catchment area and come to school by taxi from afar as Okehampton.

Starting school is a big step and one we aim to make as enjoyable and trouble free as possible. If you have a pre-school child of about 3 years old, telephone the school on 01392 255540 and make contact with us. You will be given an appointment to visit, look around and ask questions. If you wish, your child may accompany you.

We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum but recognise the importance of focusing on Literacy and Numeracy so children can achieve the highest attainment possible in these crucial areas.

The children in the Foundation Stage (Reception Children in Oak Class) follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum.

The children at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are taught English/Literacy, Mathematics/ Numeracy, Science, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Design & Technology (DT), History, Geography, Art, Music, Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE according to Devon’s agreed syllabus.), Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Sex and Relationships Education and Citizenship.

The Speech & Language Centre provides support for 15 children from Devon who do not necessarily live in Newtown itself. Speech and language therapists work with the children for three and a half days a week and plan further speech therapy for the school’s staff to implement. The children are fully integrated into mainstream classes and benefit from individual and group support from the teacher who co-ordinates the Speech and Language Centre and from an enhanced level of Teaching Assistant support.

The After School Club run by Extended Schools collects children from the school playground and they walk with supervision to St Michael's Primary School in South Lawn Terrace. Please call Yvonne Atkinson on (01392) 661581 for more details.
