ABOUT US

Parochial Church of England Primary and Nursery School functions within the partnership of the Church and the Local Education Authority. Its Christian nature is an important aspect of the School's life. The religious teaching is in accordance with the Local Authority's new Agreed Syllabus and reflects the religions represented in our community.

The new school was opened in January 2001. The school is two storey's, housing seven classrooms and a Nursery Unit. We have two combined library/computer suites, a large games hall, and a small kitchen area for children's activities. The school has its own kitchen and meals are prepared on site.

AIMS

  • To provide a positive and welcoming atmosphere for pupils, staff, parents and visitors.
  • To enable all pupils to have equal access to the whole curriculum.
  • To foster the development of good academic and social skills and respond positively to them.
  • To develop the individual character and personality of each child.
  • To enable a child to judge and develop an appreciation of what is good/bad right/wrong.
  • To assist children in recognising the differing needs of others, tolerate other people's views, ideals and religions and yet retain their own individuality.
  • To develop a partner ship between home and school which should be established before the child starts full time education and be a regular dialogue between the two, which is maintained throughout the child's school career with both parties accepting appropriate responsibilities.
  • To allow the children to develop their own skills through a variety of teaching styles and organisation within the expectations of the National Curriculum.
  • To provide a variety of teaching styles appropriate to the individual needs of the pupils and the purpose of the task.
  • To monitor our children's work in a variety of ways. Diagnostic tests, attainment tests and children's portfolios will enable all teachers to deliver the appropriate curriculum.
  • To identify children with specific learning needs and endeavour to meet these needs within the provision of the LEA.
  • To maintain and transfer clear and concise information on the pupils.
  • To ensure a smooth transition between learning environments.

EDUCATION

Every effort is made to provide for the educational needs of all the children. Children are taught in class groups of 30 maximum in order to monitor continuity and progression.

Our curriculum guidelines are in line with the Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance, National Curriculum and Tameside policy documents. Each year group is taught the following curriculum areas as specified in the National Curriculum:- Maths, English, Science, Information Technology, Design Technology History, Geography, Religious Education, Physical Education, PHSE, Art/Craft and Music. RE is taught using the Tameside Agreed Syllabus.

In addition, all upper and some lower Key Stage 2 children have swimming lessons. The staff, through whole school planning, have devised a menu of themes for each class and subject areas are delivered through these themes. Each day a dedicated amount of time is given to the development of Numeracy and Literacy. Religious Education, Physical Education and Music have an allocated time each week.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

At Parochial we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for our pupils. Provision is made within our topic work for children to be involved in a variety of organised excursions to museums, theatres, places of local interest, learning centres and field courses. Artists dance and percussion groups are invited into school. Theatre groups are also planned into our learning experience. Extra curricular activities are organised during the school day and after school. After school activities include choir, recorder, basketball and football.

As part of the PE programme, children in Years 4, 5 and 6 attend swimming lessons held at the local pool. The school works alongside the Tameside Sports Link Team and develops Top Play/Top Sport. We run a number of successful school teams, which complete, inter school matches and tournaments. The range of sporting activities includes football, hockey, netball, off the blocks, athletics, cricket, tag rugby and cross-country.
