Our Aims and Values

The aims of Powerstock School

We aim, within our Christian School Community:

To create a happy, caring and positive environment where all children feel valued and respected.

To encourage every child to reach their full potential

To provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is imaginative, creative and stimulating.

To encourage all children to be confident, independent and happy individuals who have a positive outlook on life and learning

At Powerstock School we value:

Every child as an individual

Our links with our Church and Community

High quality teaching and learning

Parents, pupils, staff and community working in partnership

Starting in our Primary School

In accordance with the Dorset Local Education Authority’s policy, we have one admission date for our new Reception children; this is in September each year. Initially, Reception children attend the morning sessions only during their first term in school. They attend school on a full time basis from January onwards.

When a child first starts at the school, parents will be asked to complete an admissions form. Parents and children will also be expected to sign a Home/School Agreement. It is important that this Agreement is talked over carefully with your child.

All forms and records on your child are confidential to you and the relevant school teaching staff. You are entitled to view them at any time.

Transfer to secondary school

Children transfer to secondary school at the age of eleven. The Sir John Colfox School Bridport and Beaminster School are our local Secondary Schools. If you wish to send your child to an alternative school, you need to apply for parental preference.

During your child’s final term at primary school, visits are made to the secondary schools and teachers and pupils meet to exchange information. All relevant records are passed on to your child’s secondary school.

The Curriculum

The National Curriculum is taught from Key Stage One and consists of core and foundation subjects:

Core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science

Foundation subjects: Information and Communication Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art and Design, Design and Technology and Physical Education

Our school council was set up in April 2005 and is made up of a group of elected pupils who meet at least once a month to discuss school issues. It gives the pupils the opportunity to become partners in their own education and make a positive contribution to the school ethos.

We are a small, busy and happy school set in the heart of the beautiful village of Powerstock. Our school values its ‘smallness’ and believes it to be a real strength. We can offer your child small class sizes, a maximum of 9 pupils per year group, excellent resources, a friendly, family atmosphere and a safe and supportive environment in which to learn.

We hope that you will find this prospectus helpful as an introduction to our school.

If you and your child wish to visit our school we will be more than happy to show you around and answer any questions you may have.
