Prettygate Junior School is a successful and caring school, serving children aged from 7 to 11, from the Prettygate area of Colchester. There are 8 classrooms (plus a demountable classroom used for small group work), a computer suite, a large hall, libraries and a good size field.

The school has a tradition of excellence, identified in the recent Ofsted inspection report, and is keen to ensure that this is built upon in all areas of school life. The basic skills of English, maths and science are developed in all year groups - within specified lessons and also as part of other subjects (eg diary writing within a history topic). Information Communication Technology (ICT) is also developed across the curriculum. The school is proud of the ICT facilities it offers children. These include two computer suites and interactive whiteboards in each class.

Alongside these subjects, children are given the opportunity to work with specialist teachers. The school employs a music teacher who works with all children. A games coach also works with the children on a programme of PE activities. Parents and friends work with small groups, supplementing class activities. The school is extremely grateful to these helpers for their time, energy and enthusiasm. Extra curricular activities provide additional opportunities - these vary during the year but include football, netball, rugby, recorders, computer club, rounders, chess.

The school has undergone some major renovation work, including new windows and cladding, furniture replacement, carpets fitted. It is believed that children and staff work better in a quality environment.

A strong pastoral system underlies the school's everyday operation. We aim to help all our children work towards becoming responsible and caring adults in a rapidly changing world.

All admission arrangements for the school are handled by Planning and Admissions, Learning Services, Chelmsford, (see prospectus for further details).

PARENTS

Dear Parent

We welcome you to our outstanding school as either a new or existing parent. We hope that your child's time here will be happy and productive.

Prettygate has a long tradition of good education and we hope you will be able to support your child and the school as we strive to build on these achievements. The school is forward looking and keen to maintain and develop good practice.

The school was last inspected in 2005 - the inspectors said:

'This is an outstanding school that has many strengths. There are very high levels of parental satisfaction and pupils think the school is 'great'. By the time pupils leave school, standards in English, mathematics and science are well above the national average. The provision for information and communication technology is a significant strength of the school, and pupils attain exceptionally high standards. Pupils of all ages and abilities make very good progress and take great pleasure in their learning.

Teaching is outstanding overall. It is best in English, mathematics, science and information and communication technology. Pupils' behaviour is very good and pupils are friendly and polite. By the time they leave school, pupils are extremely mature in their approach to work, and tackle learning in a very enthusiastic and confident manner. The school provides a very caring and supportive learning environment where the pupils' safety, health and well-being are of paramount importance.

The leadership and management of the school by the head teacher and senior staff are outstanding, and improvement since the last inspection has been very well paced and highly effective.

The school gives outstanding value for money.'

The school has two libraries, one containing a wide range of fiction and the other non-fiction materials. There is a large assembly hall, a separate dining area and a kitchen. The assembly hall is also equipped for physical education and has its own changing rooms and toilets. There are two computer suites and a bank of laptops with networked internet accessed systems. All classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. All years 5 & 6 children work with individual laptops.
The school shares the site with Prettygate Infant School . Lawns and trees surround the schools. The site continues to be developed by further plantings. In accordance with government regulations, the school encourages children and family to sign a Home/School Agreement. We see this as a means of formalising the role and expectations of all parties in the development of the child's education.

We hope you and your child will have a very positive time here at Prettygate. We look forward to working with you over the next few years.

Yours sincerely

B E Hawes

Headteacher
