Welcome to our school. We hope that the following pages will show you some of the things we do at Purlwell. The school has 9 classes. There are three reception classes, three year 1 classes and three year 2 classes. There is a nursery where children come either morning or afternoon. We have teachers and helpers who work in each classroom and everyone works very hard in our school. All our children enjoy coming to school and they are able to do lots of things. The things our children like best are reading, writing, maths, science, PE, drawing, painting, clay, making things (DT), finding out about old things (history) and going to different places (geography). Our children are all good at working on the computers and enjoy finding things out on the internet and sending and receiving e-mails.

For admission to All Key Stages children will be admitted according to the following:
Children with a Statement of Special Education Needs which names the school
Children in public care (Looked After Children)
Children living in the school’s priority admission area who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address at the date of admission
Other children living in the school’s priority admission area
Children who live outside the priority area who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address at the time of admission
Children who live outside the priority area
Notes
Children in priorities 1 and 2 above may also be admitted above the Published Admission Number (PAN)
If we cannot agree to requests for admission in priorities 3 to 6 above without exceeding the PAN, we will give priority up to the PAN to the children living nearest the school. Distance is measured in a straight line
‘Live’ refers to the child’s permanent home address on the date when applications close, or if a significant house move is involved, 16 December 2005
For children transferring from first to middle schools, preference within any of the priority groups above (up to the PAN) will be given to children attending either a first school in the middle school priority admission area, or a middle school in the school priority admission area
A Priority Admission Area means a geographical area approved by Kirklees in consultation with the governing body of the school
N.B. There is no longer a guaranteed place for any child in any of the priorities at any Key Stage
The Governing Body of the school has expressed its full agreement with the Kirklees Curriculum Statement.
The aim is for all children to be educated to high standards and to reach their full potential in all aspects of school life.
By the time pupils leave Purlwell School, it is expected they will be independent, self-disciplined, have an awareness of the world they live in, and possess high self-esteem.
During the time that your child is at Purlwell they will have access to all areas of the National Curriculum. The school is well equipped with an ICT suite and computers in every classroom, maths and science equipment, plus extensive library areas. The Early Years environment provides nursery and reception age children with quality education following the Foundation Stage guidance from DfES.
The staffing ratio in school is good. Each class has some support from language development teachers and assistants, some of who are bilingual. Your child will have the best opportunity to develop their skills in the English Language and, therefore, fulfil their entitlement to all areas of the National Curriculum.
The National Curriculum is taught throughout the school. A literacy hour and a numeracy lesson take place each day in all Key Stage One classes. Teaching is approached through cross-curricular themes. Maths, Science, Reading, Writing, Music, PE, Art and Craft, ICT, Design Technology, History and Geography are taught. Personal, Social, Health, and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) also develops the moral, cultural, and social aspects of pupils in all areas of the curriculum. RE (Religious Education) follows the Education Authority’s agreed syllabus. Parents wishing to exercise their right to withdraw a child from all or part of religious education or religious worship in accordance with Section 25 of the Education Act, are asked to contact the Headteacher by letter stating their child’s name, and reason for withdrawal Where a child is withdrawn from RE, supervision is provided. The school is not affiliated to any particular religious denomination. There is a daily act of collective worship for all pupils. On Friday there is a Muslim based Act of Worship and a Christian based Act of Worship.
Documents pertaining to the curriculum such as programmes of study, planning, policies and schemes of work may be seen at the school, by prior arrangement.
The school ensures that all pupils take part in some form of Physical Education during the week. This involves using large and small apparatus, gymnastic, and outdoor activities. All teaching staff are qualified to teach physical education.
An interest in general team sports, including cricket, rounders, rugby and football is promoted. All year groups have an annual sports day.
The classes are mixed ability; there is no streaming. Sometimes, however, children work in groups that are formed according to ability. Children are continuously assessed by teachers and during Year 2 are formally assessed as required by the Government.
All parents have three interviews each year (one per term) with their child’s class teacher, when their child’s progress is discussed, along with their future targets.
The classes in school are generally organised according to age group, although as numbers in school vary, there may be vertical grouping at times. Government legislation states that no Key Stage one class should have more than 30 pupils.
There is an accessibility plan in place, and a plan for pupils who have a disability of any kind. There is wheelchair access to all parts of school for physically disabled, specific training for staff for visually impaired pupils and a special needs team with a range of knowledge for programmes for pupils with dyspraxia, communication or language, mobility problems and hearing impaired pupils.
The school aims to give every child an equal opportunity to achieve their potential; there are policies for able pupils and gifted & talented pupils in place.
The school has a dress code where children are asked to wear colours of blue and white, in any combination. Sweatshirts and cardigans with the school logo are available to order from school (there is no other commercial outlet).
The school has a caring and supportive ethos, every member of staff being concerned for the education, welfare and security of all pupils. "The commitment and dedication of the staff is a strength of the school" (Ofsted 2002).
It is the Authority’s policy not to use corporal punishment and under the terms of the Education No 2. Act 1986 its use is illegal. Purlwell supports this policy.
The whole of the school and school grounds are designated ‘No Smoking’ areas.
