Welcome !!!

Rainow Primary School is a good school with several outstanding features. The curriculum is rich and rewarding and benefits from the outstanding rural location of the school and its immediate environment. Parents overwhelmingly support the school and attest to the fact that their children are safe, happy, well cared for and doing well.

Results in national tests at age 11 remain very high: overall, they are well above the national average. The school continues to meet and exceed its challenging targets. Pupils' personal development and well-being are good. Pupils are extremely well behaved and courteous.

Aims and Principles

These aims and principles are directed towards all pupils, staff, parents, governors and visitors attending Rainow Primary School.

    - To promote and maintain good behaviour – developing honest,

informed, skilled and honourable citizens of the future.

    - To create and atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance where children are happy, safe and learning.

    - To clearly explain what is meant by good behaviour and what is unacceptable behaviour.

    - To develop a partnership between home, school and the community and so promote children’s social development.

    - To work towards self discipline and an awareness of the consequences of ones own behaviour.

    - To develop positive behavioural attitudes.

    - To be consistent and fair when applying rewards and sanctions

Rainow School Rules

These rules are reasonable and easily understood. They apply to everyone, in all areas around the school.

Be kind, truthful and never say or do anything to hurt other people

Listen carefully and follow instructions first time

Take care of your own things and our school

Do your best and allow others to do their best too

Be polite to one another, follow our courtesy code

COURTESY CODE

Be polite to one another.

Remember to say 'Please' and 'Thank You'.

Never push in front of other people or rush to be first.

Do not interrupt when someone else is speaking.

Say 'Excuse me' when you pass in front of someone.

Always stand back and let grown-ups through if you are in a doorway.

Show respect for others at all times.

These rules are displayed in the school for all children. Whole school positive behaviour is based around these rules.

Rewards and Awards

The staff at Rainow Primary School are aware of the impact of value and praise, at least 3 times praise to censure. We recognise that praise gives a boost to self-esteem, it encourages positive behaviour.

School rewards will be given for sensible, appropriate, thoughtful behaviour, effort and achievement.

School Rewards

Verbal praise

Individual reward (smiley face, house points, stamps, stickers, stars, etc. etc.)

Leaf award – for outstanding merit, for display on a "Tree of Achievement".

Using other children as examples of good behaviour

Displaying good work.

Being sent to other teachers/adults to show work.

Notes to parents in reading records

Five minutes extra playtime for upper juniors when appropriate

School Prefects

To encourage independence, responsibility and self-esteem, children who have proved themselves able to assist others in positive behaviour will be invited to become school prefects. Prefects will be determined by the Year 6 teacher.

Sanctions

Rewards are the best tools for modifying behaviour. However, consequences are required to teach the limit of school rules.

The Elton Report recommends that:-

"Pupils should learn from experience to expect fair and consistently applied punishments for inappropriate behaviour".

Sanctions must be fair and consistent when children misbehave. Children will choose to accept these consequences if they break the set rules. Staff are reminded that under current legislation they are limited in the sanctions that they can use. However, it may be necessary from time to time to use "reasonable force" in order to ensure the safety of the child or staff or property.

All actions are in ascending order. It is not necessary to "work through" the list.

Mild verbal warning – child is to understand why behaviour is inappropriate

Firm verbal warning with the expectation that the behaviour will not be repeated.

Repeating careless/poor work.

Being asked to carry out a punishment (tables, writing, letter of apology)

Losing free choice session.

Child works/sits alone for specified time

Child excluded from class or group.

Child misses break/playtime

Child is sent to Deputy Headteacher or Headteacher

Further inappropriate behaviour may lead to

Child placed on class report, behaviour monitored

Standard letter sent home to parents

Parents invited into school by class teacher

Parents invited into school by Headteacher

Daily school report put in place with parent

Outside agency support/advice requested

Temporary exclusion – Chair of Governors informed

Permanent exclusion if appropriate.

The importance of protecting pupils from bullying cannot be over-estimated. There is therefore an additional attachment to this policy which deals specifically with bullying.
