A level success for Rhyl High students
Once again Rhyl High School Sixth Form students excelled in their AS and A2 levels.
The overall pass rate was just over 90%, which, although below the national average, simply reflects the fact that the school has increasingly adopted a supportive and inclusive approach to their students, giving as many as possible the chance to achieve. Indeed there was a 100% pass rate in more subjects this year than last.
At AS level there were more students studying a greater range of subjects. The AS level pass rate increased by around 10%, with a massive 50% increase in the number of A to C passes at this level.
There is special commendation for Thomas Jones who gained 2 grade As and a grade B at full A level, with year 12 students Kathryn Lee achieving 4 grade A passes at AS level. Fellow student Chris Widdows gained 3 grade A passes and Year 12 exchange students Isabell Heise and Jennifer Schnitzer, gained 2 grade As and a grade B pass.
"But success doesn't just mean getting A grade passes" says Assistant Deputy Head and Head of Sixth Form Keith Jones. "We get pleasure from seeing all of students achieving to their potential and this is a testament to our fully inclusive and supportive ethos at post 16 level. We are particularly delighted with the number of students who complete the full one or two year courses."
This year has seen a full A level programme, boosted by seven extra subjects on offer, making a grand total of 21 AS and A level subjects. Added to this will be the introduction of the Welsh Baccalaureate into the Sixth Form from this September.
It is a feather in Rhyl High School's cap that we are one of a relatively small number of schools in the whole of Wales to be able to offer this exciting new qualification.
Farewell to loyal servants
With the end of term on Friday, we will be saying farewell to long term members of staff: Mrs Kay Johansson, Mr Brian Hughes, Mr Richard Snelson, Dr Ned Chapman and Mr Rhys Harrison. Their contributions have been immense over the years and they will all leave very big gaps. Happy Retirement to you all!
End of Term but the battle continues
The school closes for the summer holidays on Friday but the campaign to retain the Sixth Form continues. Head of Sixth Mr Keith Jones, and many of the current Sixth Form, have been busy raising awareness for the S.O.S. campaign, and hundreds of letters have been forwarded to the Education Authority in a mass show of support for the school.
School to fight proposed sixth form closure
Following an overwhelming show of support from parents, pupils - both past and present - and local employers, the governors and senior leadership team of the school have vowed to fight tooth and nail the proposals of Cambridge Education to close the sxith form and transfer 16+ education to the Rhyl College.
This proposal is a blatant attempt to remove any choice that our students have at 16 of where to study next. No other area in Denbighshire has been targeted in this way.
Further details of how you can lend your support to the campaign will follow.
New Headteacher
The governors are pleased to announce that Mr Mark Edwards has been appointed as Head of the school.
Mr Edwards has been Head of Ralph Thoresby High School for five years and is originally from the Wrexham area.
He takes up his post in September.
