Roseburn Primary School

Our School Building from the front...
Roseburn Primary School first opened its doors in 1894 when its near neighbour, the Murrayfield Rugby Stadium was still a polo field. It has long been a centre point of the Roseburn community and is proud of its history. The school is part of the City of Edinburgh Children and Families Department and since it first opened it has welcomed boys and girls of all faiths and backgrounds.
...and from the back.
The main school building is a traditional stone structure with generous sized classrooms designed to house individual or composite classes. It is fully adapted for disabled access to the ground floor and offers the very best of modern facilities throughout. Two additional classrooms are housed in a state-of-the-art unit in the playground and a separate self-contained Nursery sits to the side of the main building.

The school boasts a well-stocked modern library, a gym, computers in every classroom (with internet access), a general purpose room, lunchhall and dining room. From August 2006 we have had the use of brand new mini Mac computers and laptops across the school with a computer suite of 17 computers to allow a whole class to work at once. We are also in the process of buying interactive whiteboards for all our classrooms, thanks to the financial support from the PTA.At present the school roll is 270, split into 2 nursery classes (am and pm) and 9 classes from Pl to P7.
Sometimes a class may include the oldest children of one stage and the youngest children of the next stage. Such 'composite' classes are common throughout Scotland and are formed when there are too few or too many children within an educational year to form complete, single year classes.

Roseburn was built when boys and girls were...
...kept separate and even had separate doors and playgrounds.

ETHOS

August 2007 Our Vision
Our Vision for Roseburn is one centred on our pupils where:

•Pupils feel safe and happy
•Pupils are given educational opportunities and experiences in and beyond the classroom – we have wide range of visits, trips, clubs and visitors to the school
•Pupils feel valued for who they are and are given opportunities to express their views – effective pupils councils, class circle times, feelings folder and worry box
•Pupils experience the highest standards of learning and teaching which enables them to achieve their full potential.

Our Aims
Every year our school aims are tailored to reflect up to date local and National priorities and to take on board developments specific to our school and community.

This year, our school aims are to develop:

•Curriculum for Excellence
•Attainment and Achievement
•Learning and Teaching
•Support for Learning
•Ethos
•Resource Management
•Management, Leadership and Quality Assurance
•Health promoting School

Our Values board
Our Values board
Our Values
Underpinning all aspects of our our policies and practices in school are the values we uphold and the way in which the whole school and community interacts with each other:

We are kind
We are respectful
We are responsible
We are honest
and we always do our best

These values are what we stand for at Roseburn. This year we decided that it was important to make these explicit and for everyone to be a part of it.

In doing so we chose to look at the Scottish Parliament and their aspirations for the people of Scotland as citizens of the future:

•Integrity
•Wisdom
•Justice
•Compassion

As a school we have adopted these for values and linked them to the four capacities outlined in the Curriculum for Excellence

•Successful Learners
•Effective Contributors
•Confident Individuals
•Responsible Citizens

How we developed our Values
Our whole staff worked together to produce these values and to put them in place in our school. It is important to say that this has to be a collegiate process involving pupils, staff and parents. At the moment we are at the beginning of our implementation stage. These values have been introduced in assemblies. Class teachers will be focusing on these values in their classes as their class rules. The pupils will be exploring these values in language that they understand and asking the following questions:

•What do these values look like in our school?
•How will it feel to live our lives upholding these values?
•What will the world be like if everyone upheld these values?

As you can also see these 4 values have formed the cornerstones of our reward system – pupils will receive certificate and badges of these values. You can see our Star Awards page which shows those pupils who have received an award.

Finally, what you can also see is how these values illustrate what we stand for at Roseburn and aid us in achieving the vision we have for our pupils: to feel confident and successful to become effective contributors and responsible citizens of the 21st century.

This section gives you details about some of the whole school activities we are doing, which includes our work to become a health-promoting school, our enterprise education and our work to become an Eco-school.

NURSERY

Here is our new building! It is bright, spacious and comfortable and we are delighted with it - staff, parents and children.
Here is our new nursery
Here is our new nursery
New features of the new nursery include excellent facilities for disabled access, a Parent's Room, a huge storecupboard and an office for staff. The playroom is light and airy, and we are lucky to have been able to fill it with new furniture.

We also have lots of new equipment in the outdoor area - a playhouse, a sandpit, a chalk board and lots of new ride-on-toys such as trikes and scooters. Our PTA were very supportive in providing funds for many new purchases.

We still have places at the Nursery this session. Children's names can be added to the waiting list from their 2nd birthday and take up a place (if available) from their 3rd birthday.

Please call (0131) 337 6096 for further information.

CLUBS

The Webzone Gang

The Primary Seven children are the Webzone Gang. They are constantly gathering information about what is happening in the school and publishing it weekly so the site is always up to date.

We have a complete P7 website at
http://www.roseburn.ik.org/ . We will be very busy keeping our site up to date as well as assisting with the school main site. There's not much to see yet but visit regularly and you will see it coming together!
