The Curriculum

Rush Green Junior School uses the National Curriculum as a framework.


We use Barking and Dagenham's English Curriculum, "Primary English Project", throughout the School.

Barking and Dagenham's "Improving Primary Mathematics" is the basis for our curriculum.


We use our own successful Science scheme.


Our scheme is based upon QCA's and Barking and Dagenham's I.C.T. schemes.

We also teach the foundation subjects as in the National Curriculum.

How Classes Are Arranged

We have classes arranged chronologically in mixed-ability groups. There are several teaching techniques within each class, ranging from whole class teaching to individual teaching. There are at present 14 classes in the Junior School.

School Hours

Morning Session Lower School 9.00 am to 12.15 pm
  Upper School 9.00 am to 12 midday
Afternoon Session Lower School 1.05 pm to 3.10 pm
  Upper School 12.50 pm to 3.10 pm.

We would remind you that School opens for children at 8.45 am, at which time we accept responsibility for them.


We have a uniform which is worn by the children in our School.


The School follows the Borough policy on admissions. If there are more applications for places than there are places in the School the following criteria are used:

  1. Children who have a brother or sister attending the School at the date of admission.
  2. Children attending Rush Green Infants School linked with the Junior School by the LEA's approved linking arrangements.
  3. Children resident in the priority area for admission (this is the neighbourhood area designated by the LEA as giving priority for admission to a particular school).
  4. Children living closest to the School measured by the nearest available walking route.

If your child is not offered a place at the school of your preference you have the right of appeal against the decision.

The School seeks to provide a balanced curriculum and develops the work of individual children according to their age, experience and ability. As laid down by the Education Act of 1988 the School follows the National Curriculum in the core subjects of Mathematics, English and Science and in the foundation subjects of Technology, Information Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art and Physical Education. Religious Education is also taught. Personal, Social and Health Education and Multicultural Education are also incorporated into the children's work. All subjects are generally taught as separate bodies of knowledge. Work is currently being undertaken on many of our policy documents but copies of the National Curriculum documents, Borough policy statements and our own School policies are available for inspection on request.

Reading is taught carefully and systematically to all children in order that they develop skills needed for fluency and understanding. We encourage children to take books home and engage in a Home/ School partnership. A book fair is held at least once a year.

A clear and legible style of handwriting is taught and the school aims for accuracy in spelling and punctuation.

Much mathematical work is practical and helps to form sound concepts. Number concepts are regarded as crucial and are used in a variety of ways. The Borough Mathematics Initiative provides continuity and progression from the Infant School.

Under the National Curriculum it will be expected that the average child attains level 4 in the core subjects by the time they leave the Junior School. National testing (SATs) take place when the children reach Year 6 and the results of these tests are made available to the relevant parents.


Rush Green Governors adopted the LEA statement of principles for 'Partnership with parents'. Our aim is to establish and maintain a positive partnership between home and school, actively involving parents in their child's formal and informal education and encouraging joint responsibility for discipline. At Rush Green Junior we expect parents will :

  1. Support the School in creating the environment necessary for children to become successful learners.
  2. Understand that we have rules and that they are there for the protection and well being of all children in our care.

Parents can show a commitment to their child's education by:

  1. Making sure that children attend school regularly;
  2. Reading the information that is sent home;
  3. Attending meetings and keeping appointments;
  4. Talking to children about all of the things they do in School and showing that they value what their child has been doing and learning;
  5. Providing suitable equipment.

We will aim to :-

  1. Provide a balanced and appropriate curriculum and good quality teaching for your child;
  2. Develop each child's potential;
  3. Encourage your child to develop good attitudes to his/ her school work;
  4. Provide a safe and orderly environment for all pupils within the School;
  5. Develop an expectation that all staff and pupils will treat each other with respect and tolerance;
  6. Contact you regularly about the School, its curriculum, organisation and activities;
  7. Report regularly to you on the educational progress and individual development of your child;
  8. Let you know quickly of any problems or difficulties your child may be having at School;
  9. Respond promptly and fairly to any problems or complaints you may raise with the School;
  10. Welcome your support and involvement in the work of the School.
