Saltwood CE Primary School

Headteacher: Mrs Elizabeth Pettersen B.Ed, D.M.S., N.P.Q.H.

As headteacher of this historic primary school, I am very pleased to welcome you to Saltwood. I am immensely proud to be leading this school through the next exciting phase of its history. We have an excellent reputation in the area and there is much to commend Saltwood School.

Our children are delightful to work with and I firmly believe that everyone is special. We have 222 pupils, 7 classes and a distinguished educational record.
Pupils and staff enjoy an after School Club (3-2-1 club), active Friends supporters, many school clubs including yoga, dance, athletics, football, netball, French, choir, recorders and a Saturday fun club. We have an extensive playground including an attractive large field, modern well maintained buildings, an ICT suite, a well stocked library and all situated in an idyllic village location.

VALUES

Aims of the School - The overall aims of the school are to:
To be a happy school - a school which the children will enjoy attending.
Affirm God's love for every individual.

Help children to live together in a community, encouraging care for others before themselves and to become responsible, independent people.
Be a safe place in which mistakes can be made, learned from and forgiven.

Release the potential of every individual to enable them to reach the highest level of achievement of which they are capable and equip them for life.
To give every child the experience of success and a sense of personal value.

To broaden pupils' horizons; to help develop lively, enquiring minds, the ability to question and argue rationally, to work with imagination and a sense of purpose.

Ethos and Values

We firmly believe that academic success is just one part of our school and we aim to develop our pupils in all areas. We place a high priority on children behaving in a respectful way to adults and their peers and we consider that every child is special.

We develop a caring ethos within our school at every opportunity. Through our efforts in this area we have achieved 'Healthy School" status:

We have a School Council with representatives from years 2 to 6. The pupils have a real say
in how the school is run and we have made changes as a result - these include, for example, serving blackcurrant squash as well as orange squash at lunchtimes.

The year 6 pupils sit amongst the year R pupils at lunchtime and assist them as necessary, cutting up food and so on.

We have a Buddy scheme on the playground run by year 6 pupils so that no pupils are left out or feel lonely.

The school has a Green Team that cares for the school environment, collecting litter and helping at lunchtime

The pupils demonstrate a huge compassion for those less fortunate than themselves and have raised considerable sums over the past few years for local, national and international charities.
In 2004/5 in excess of £1800 was raised. Some of the events have been organised by the pupils themselves including an annual House Charity Day. They have also been involved in Blue Peter fund raising, Red Nose Day and Children in Need to name but a few.

CURRICULUM

1)

Every child is valued in our school and we have invested much in all levels of ability. All classes have Teaching Assistants who help those who may need a little extra support. We also have a very active programme for Gifted and Talented pupils including Saltwood’s own special SAM (Saltwood Advanced Mathematics) maths master class group which is used by many other schools in the area. Our Gifted and talented pupils have taken part in art workshops, science days, writing workshops, visits to construction sites to name but a few.
2)
Children making full use of our Promethean Interactive Whiteboards
3)

Once children start school they are introduced to the Foundation curriculum through a busy and varied round of activities. Our Year R area is fully equipped and features a large enclosed outdoor area, which in 2004 was partially covered to ensure that there is all year outdoor play.

4)

Children start the National Curriculum on entering year 1 and this is taught throughout the school. At all times our aim is that children enjoy and achieve and make the most of their abilities, whatever these might be. A large element of fun is introduced into the curriculum through themed days that occur each term. In recent years we have held a Science Day, an Art Day, a Music Day, a French Day and several Book Weeks. Children dress up in the theme of the day and participate in various workshops and activities.

Together with this we are regularly visited by theatre groups and workshops who add a lively dimension to our school day. We have been visited by a group of Puppeteers, a science theatre workshop exploring work on light and teeth, a drama workshop on staying healthy and being environmentally friendly.

6)
Illustration of current IT Facilities

The school currently has 2 computers and an interactive whiteboard in every classroom as well as a separate IT Suite. Our computer facilities will be considerably enhanced next financial year with the construction of a new IT suite.

All classes take part in visits to locations and activities linked to their curriculum areas of study. In recent years classes have visited Legoland and Dover museum, The Science museum, Cobtree Museum of Kent Life, Wildwood, Canterbury Cathedral and the Marlowe Theatre and Diggerland. Our year 6 pupils participate in a residential trip to Bowles each year to take part in activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, dry slope skiing. This trip helps to develop self esteem creating more confident young people. Our year 5 pupils also take part in a one day team building activity session at Arethusa near Rochester.
