Every child is valued in our school and we have invested much in all levels of ability. All classes have Teaching Assistants who help those who may need a little extra support. We also have a very active programme for Gifted and Talented pupils including Saltwood’s own special SAM (Saltwood Advanced Mathematics) maths master class group which is used by many other schools in the area. Our Gifted and talented pupils have taken part in art workshops, science days, writing workshops, visits to construction sites to name but a few.

3)	Once children start school they are introduced to the Foundation curriculum through a busy and varied round of activities. Our Year R area is fully equipped and features a large enclosed outdoor area, which in 2004 was partially covered to ensure that there is all year outdoor play.

4)	Children start the National Curriculum on entering year 1 and this is taught throughout the school. At all times our aim is that children enjoy and achieve and make the most of their abilities, whatever these might be. A large element of fun is introduced into the curriculum through themed days that occur each term. In recent years we have held a Science Day, an Art Day, a Music Day, a French Day and several Book Weeks. Children dress up in the theme of the day and participate in various workshops and activities.

5)	Together with this we are regularly visited by theatre groups and workshops who add a lively dimension to our school day. We have been visited by a group of Puppeteers, a science theatre workshop exploring work on light and teeth, a drama workshop on staying healthy and being environmentally friendly.

	The school currently has 2 computers and an interactive whiteboard in every classroom as well as a separate IT Suite. Our computer facilities will be considerably enhanced next financial year with the construction of a new IT suite.
7)	All classes take part in visits to locations and activities linked to their curriculum areas of study. In recent years classes have visited Legoland and Dover museum, The Science museum, Cobtree Museum of Kent Life, Wildwood, Canterbury Cathedral and the Marlowe Theatre and Diggerland. Our year 6 pupils participate in a residential trip to Bowles each year to take part in activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, dry slope skiing. This trip helps to develop self esteem creating more confident young people. Our year 5 pupils also take part in a one day team building activity session at Arethusa near Rochester.

Saltwood Church of England School is a Voluntary Aided School and the Governing Body is the admissions authority for the school. Applications must be made by completing the school’s admission form.

The number of intended admissions is 30 at Key Stage 1 and 33 at Key Stage 2. Children reach statutory school age at the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday. The Governors’ policy, however, is to admit children to the Reception Class before statutory school age.

Admissions are based on parental preference but, in the event of over-subscription, the Governors will consider the admission of children in accordance with the following criteria in order of priority (see footnotes):

1)	In line with the School Admissions’ Code of Practice, Looked-after Children will be given priority in over-subscription criteria.
2)	Siblings of children already in the school during the 2003/04 academic year will be given priority over other applicants.
3)	Children whose parents live, or are about to live (e.g. have entered into a legally binding contract on a home), in the ecclesiastical parish of Saltwood, who worship regularly at Saltwood Parish Church and are on the Church electoral roll.
4)	Children whose parents live, or are about to live (e.g. have entered into a legally binding contract on a home), in the ecclesiastical parish of Saltwood, and who worship regularly at any other Christian Church. The Priest or Minister will be contacted to verify the regularity of worship.
5)	Children whose parents live, or are about to live (e.g. have entered into a legally binding contract on a home), in the ecclesiastical parish of Saltwood.
6)	Children with medical or compassionate needs.
7)	Children whose parents live outside the ecclesiastical parish of Saltwood, who worship regularly at Saltwood Parish Church and are on the Church electoral roll.
8)	Children whose parents live outside the ecclesiastical parish of Saltwood and who worship regularly at any other Christian Church. The minister will be contacted to verify the regularity of worship.
9)	Children whose parents live outside the ecclesiastical parish of Saltwood.
Footnotes:
The following order of priorities will be applied when applications within any of the above categories exceed places available and it is necessary to decide between them.
1.	The presence of a sibling in the school (including step, half, adopted and fostered children). This includes children whose elder sibling attends the school and is in Year 6, but will be in Year 7 (Secondary School) when the sibling starts school.
2.	Proximity to the school by recognised public rights of way.
This order of priorities will be applied where a space becomes available and there is a waiting list in operation.
Appeals:
	In the event of an application being unsuccessful parents have the right of appeal. This should be made in the first instance, in writing, to Mrs J Medhurst or Mrs C Wade, Council Secretariat, Sessions House, County Hall, Maidstone ME14 1XQ.
