Sandwich Infant School is housed in a Victorian building near to the centre of the town. The school comprises of six classrooms, a hall, a library/television room and a technology room. In addition to a large playground area, there is a small playground for use by the youngest pupils and a walled playing field. A wildlife garden has also recently been developed.

Pupils enter the school in September of the year in which they will be five. They start school in the Reception classes and begin to develop the necessary skills to enable them to achieve the Early Learning Goals at the end of the year. Pupils then move through Year One and Year Two. During these years they follow the National Curriculum for English, Mathematics, Science, I.T, Geography, Art, Music and Physical Education. The pupils also study Religious Education.

At Sandwich Infant School we believe in making learning as exciting as possible. Therefore, where possible, the curriculum is delivered through topics. Pupils learn through direct first-hand experiences. The resources of the school are supplemented with educational visits and a variety of visitors into school.

 At the end of Year Two pupils transfer to Sandwich Junior School. This is a natural progression as the two schools have close links and regularly liaise with each other.

We have six classrooms, a resources room, hall and a library/television room. There are 2 computers in each year 1 and year 2 class and 4 computers in the reception unit. All computers have internet access which is limited to education sites. We also have a mobile bank of 16 laptop computers for whole class ICT lessons. All classes have been installed with Smartboards. In the main playground there is an adventure trail, role play areas and playground markings with a variety of games and activities. The playground is divided, informally, between a "noisy" and a "quiet" zone. This allows the children to select how they wish to play. The adventure trail in the main playground     The Reception outdoor area   The Reception unit has an outdoor area with a climbing frame, shop / role play, roadway for bikes, scooters and trucks and grass area with a tree to provide shade in summer.   The Wildlife Garden   We are very fortunate in also having a summer garden and a wildlife garden. The summer garden is used for P.E lessons and playtime in the summer months and provides a wonderful setting for our Sports Day and Mayfair events.The wildlife garden, with a pond is part of the summer garden and provides an outside classroom where nature and science can be explored.

The Parent, Teacher and Friends Association (PTFA) is an open, friendly group helping the school provide a rounded educational experience for our children. We raise funds for the added extras that enrich school life and provide support for school events. Although our aim is to fund raise, we do this in a low-key style such that we don't overdo the fundraising events and hope that people enjoy those that we do put on. Examples of the things we provide: We enable the staff to buy extra equipment for the classroom, on request, if it is outside the normal school budget.Recently we have provided the funds for computer equipment including a Smartboard, special bookcases when the library was updated, a cupboard to house the hall sound system and classroom audio equipment.
We pay for the Christmas parties for all years and provide the catering for school / parent meetings (e.g. Sports Day, Open Afternoons etc.) We also provide a book club, where the children can choose a book and then save up for it over a number of weeks. The books are generally not expensive, so saving up for them does not take too long. This promotes a measure of independence and an understanding of the concepts of saving! We run a non-profit making tuck shop, supplying a range of, mainly, penny sweets, on sunny Friday afternoons in the playground. This is great fun for the children at the end of the week. It also encourages an understanding of addition and money! Every year we organise the major fund raising event for the school, the Mayfair. This is very well supported by the local community and is great fun for all the family! The 2007 Mayfair, with everybody's help, raised just under £3,000. The school will be able to buy a pirate play ship for the summer garden. Thanks to all.
