Seer Green is a Church of England Voluntary Aided School in the Diocese of Oxford. It was founded in 1859 on the present site and additional land and buildings have been added over the years.

In 1999/2000 an extensive building programme has given our children the benefit of bright and spacious teaching environments, including a superbly stocked library and a fully networked ICT suite.

The School itself is set in four and a half acres of land, providing a pond, gardens and a generous area for playing fields, yet having ample space for  hard surfaces and grass play. There is also an extensive area of woodland, which is used for environmental studies.

The School serves the children of the Parish of Seer Green and Jordans, from the age of four to transfer to secondary school at eleven. However, because of our popularity, the school takes in children from a much wider catchment area.

The School Community

We work closely with Holy Trinity, Seer Green Parish Church, and encourage links with other local Christian communities.

The children experience a daily act of worship, which reflects our Church of England foundation. However, we welcome children from other denominations and cultural backgrounds.

Clergy from local churches and other Christian organisations present monthly assemblies. Children also participate in and lead services at Holy Trinity Parish Church.

Classes prepare and present assemblies on a regular basis, to which parents, and children from Seer Green Nursery are invited.

Everyone Is Important

At Seer Green CE Combined School, we value each person as an individual and celebrate each person’s success. Certificates achieved, both in school and out of school, are presented each week in assembly.

Children work in spacious classrooms, developing at their own pace, and are encouraged to have high expectations.

Appropriate provision is made for children with special educational needs. They enjoy good support from a teacher with particular responsibility for their progress, from additional classroom support and from County and other agencies, where appropriate.

Seer Green CE School recognises the needs of more able children and work is planned to encourage personal development and high expectation and achievement.

The school follows a clearly defined Assertive Discipline Policy, which encourages children to take responsibility for his or her own learning and behaviour.

We believe that parents are a valuable resource. We invite them to take an active part in school activities and welcome their participation in a diverse range of activities.

We have an ‘open door’ policy in Seer Green CE Combined School. We value parents’ views and staff are always pleased to discuss any concerns. We believe that pupils, parents and school are a team that should work together to achieve the highest possible standards in all areas of school life.

CURRICULUM

Accessing The Curriculum

Children access a broad and balanced curriculum within the classroom and are given the opportunity to develop additional skills through many extra-curricular activities.

Pupils are encouraged to both attain and maintain a high standard in all areas of their school life, to achieve self-discipline and self-motivation and to develop a sense of high self-esteem and empathy with the needs of others.

The broadly based curriculum includes the core and foundation subjects of Curriculum 2000 as well as other cross-curricular areas. It is taught throughout Year 1 to Year 6, spanning the two key stages. Reception children enjoy learning through the Foundation Curriculum.

Curriculum 2000 includes:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Science
  • Religious Education
  • ICT
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and Design
  • Design Technology
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Personal, Social and Health Education

Religious Education is taught from Reception to Year 6 following the County and Diocesan approved syllabus.

Children are taught in their year group by their class teacher, and some specialist teaching takes place throughout the school. Pupils are ability grouped where appropriate. Grouping is reviewed regularly and is very flexible.

Children's work is regularly assessed and results are evaluated. Achievable targets are set and children are encoraged to meet expectation.

Parents are informed about curriculum needs as necessary and curriculum meetings for each year group are held at the beginning of each new achademic year. This enables the class teacher to outline the planned year's work and homework expectations, and gives parnets the opportunity to ask questions.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

Music is an area of excellence within our school.

The children enjoy many musical opportunities, including class based music lessons, peripatetic tuition and voluntary, extra-curricular activities.

These wide-ranging activities include:

  • choir
  • 'stringies'
  • chamber choir
  • violin
  • orchestra
  • guitar
  • windband
  • brass instruments
  • woodwind
  • percussion
  • clarinet
  • recorders
  • flute

Children participate in a number of musical productions throughout the year, as well as performing on a weekly basis in assembly, sharing their experiences and expertise in the musical productions, whatever their ability. Parents and members of the local community enjoy being entertained at our Spring and Summer Concerts, and Christmas is celebrated with a Key Stage 1 Nativity and Key Stage 2 Musical.

The children in our school enjoy the luxury of a superbly stocked and appointed library.

Visits to the library are part of weekly school life and children learn to use, love and appreciate books.

Our fully networked ICT suite was purpose built to address the computer needs of the children. It contains sixteen PCs, which the children use to access the Internet and develop computing skills. In addition, there is a 'stand alone' PC in each classroom, and new for 2004 are whiteboard interactive screens for many classrooms.

Children are encouraged to use books and computers to facilitate personal research. Where appropriate, computers are used to access other areas of the curriculum.
