Shaw Primary is a school catering for children aged three to eleven. The children begin their education in our nursery, giving them a wide variety of experiences that prepare them for entry into the Reception class in the term they are five. During their first years at school, children grow and develop rapidly, both physically and intellectually. This is an exciting time for you as parents, and for your children, which we are privileged to share.

Children will develop the skills of language, mathematics, science and technology. Your child will build confidence, develop self-reliance, learn to make decisions and develop the ability to express feelings and ideas. It is important that children learn to build relationships with other children and adults and be sensitive to the needs of others.

In order to fulfill these needs, the school is organised to meet the needs of individual children and to provide experiences to enable each child to reach his/her full potential. We aim to create a warm, caring atmosphere where the child can feel safe, relaxed, accepted and valued. We recognise the need to develop the child’s self-confidence and see this as necessary for the child to make full use of the curriculum offered.

CURRICULUM

Our overall aims are to offer an education that develops the individual potential of each child as fully as we can to support the chlld in reachlng the highest levels of attainment.
We also aim to:
•  develop the self-esteem of the children to help them grow in maturity, confidence and independence in preparation for their secondary education;
•  develop a supportive partnership between home and school, with each partner recognising and valuing the other’s contribution.

To achieve these aims we must make full use of all resources, human and material that are available to us. We must also remember that each child is an individual and that we must endeavour to ensure that his/her needs (both academic and physical) are met during his/her time at Shaw Primary School
The two broad aims for the school curriculum are:

•To provide opportunities for all pupils to learn and achieve.
•To promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Each child should:
*be praised and its achievements valued;
*have targets set that are both challenging and attainable;
*develop the confidence to become independent learners;

*
make worthwhile contributions to a caring community;
*be recognised as an individual and valued member of society;
*have equal opportunities regardless of gender, colour, ethnicity, religion or disability.

The educational needs of the children are encompassed, broadly, within the headings:
intellectual and aesthetic, personal and social, spiritual and moral. The curriculum seeks to introduce children to a wide variety of interests and experiences and to help them achieve skills for life.  Work is planned to enable children to gain a sense of achievement and to develop self confidence, to think for themselves and to make a valued contribution to the life of the school.

IIn order to ensure educational continuity and progression for the children the school has developed policies and schemes of work for each year group in the following areas of the National Curriculum:

English                          Mathematics                        Science                                  I.C.T.                            History                            Geography                    Art                                   Music                                     Design and Technology     RE                                PE

English is taught through a daily Literacy Hour which concentrates on teaching reading, writing, handwriting, spelling and comprehension through a structured programme designed to meet the needs of all children. In addition to the Literacy Hour the children have a daily spelling and handwriting lesson which starts during morning registration.

Mathematics is taught through a Numeracy Hour following a highly structured programme of study. Areas covered include: mental maths, basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, shape and space, capacity and problem solving.

The children at the Foundation Stage (nursery and reception classes) follow a curriculum that enables the children to develop the following skills: linguistic, mathematical, aesthetic, technological, personal and social, spiritual and moral. This is achieved through a topic approach. Many of their skills are developed through practical activities and structured play. The children in the Reception classes study English and Mathematics through Literacy and Numeracy hours.

Each class has a 1 hour session during the week in our purpose built ICT suite.  The children also use class based computers to support all other curriculum areas.
