LESLEY DACK - HEADMISTRESS

Mrs Dack has been at the school now for six years, headmistress for three, during that time all the requirements of recent legislation have been put in place including LMS, National Curriculum and assessment, target setting, teacher appraisal (called review and development) and reporting to parents.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Message from Mrs Dack:

We endeavour to take the best of the proven traditional teaching methods and mix these with the best of the modern ideas to provide a stimulating and productive education. We encourage high standards within the broad curriculum. English, Mathematics, Science, French, Art and Sport are taught by teachers specialising in these subjects. History and Geography, PHSE and RE are also part of our timetabled day.

Our results speak for themselves; a significant porportion of our children reach Grammar or Public School due to strong English and Mathematics teaching throughout the school with dedicated staff.

Above all, we aim to give our pupils confidence in their ability, confidence in their appearance, confidence to work individually or as part of a team, and confidence to meet the challenges ahead.

Lesley Dack
Headmistress

Shernold was founded in 1935 and although it has expanded over the years, has kept sight of its original aims to create a happy, positive environment in which children flourish.

The school has 8 classes (2 within the Kindergarten Unit) and children are grouped according to the class placement policy. The school's planned admission limit is 20. The number of children on the roll is 160. With small class sizes and highly qualified, experienced, and committed staff, we can provide the best education for our pupils. We particularly extend those gifted and talented children. We believe that each child must be given the opportunity to succeed, in whatever field, and we encourage self-respect, self-awareness and a feeling of community spirit within the school.

Shernold has an excellent range of facilities, including an art room, music room, computer room and a well-stocked liabrary. The main building is a substantial mid-Victorian house, full of character yet well equipped, and with a warm welcoming atmosphere. Physical Education and games are well catered for, with a swimming pool, netball/tennis court, seven aside football, gym equipment and ample playing space for hockey, cricket, football and rounders. With a thriving young orchestra and choir, music and drama contributes much to the life of Shernold School. We offer lessons from highly qualified teachers in all areas, concentrating on piano, strings and woodwind. After school clubs include Drama, Science, Orchestra, Modern Dance, Ballet, Tap, Recorder and Football/Sports.

The school runs a supervised pre class from 3.15pm - 5.00pm every afternoon and additional supervision from 8.30am - 8.50am.

FOR PARENTS

KINDERGARTEN

Our Kindergarten provides good nursery education and prepares children for entry into the main school. Qualified teaching staff create a stimulating environment where children are encouraged to share and relate to one another, and begin to acquire skills in reading, writing and numbers.

We have a well-equipped indoor playroom. A garden with both grass and hard surface, with climbing equipment including swings and slides, play house and a 'pets corner'. Qualified, caring staff have created a stimulating environment where the children can learn social and educational skills. We pay particular attention to reading, writing and numbers. Good manners and inter-action with other children are also a part of this all-round education.

At 3 years children may start by attending mornings only and progress to full time schooling during that year. In Kindergarten 1 they begin number and letter recognition, handwriting skills, creative artwork, balance, initial drama skills and music as well as learning to play positively with their peers.

At 4 years old they begin the Reading, Mathematics and English schemes and are introduced to French. Other skills development continues here in order to ease progress into Class 1 at age 5. Key stage 1 National curriculum is started in this year.

Each child's progress is monitored and a record is kept. This will be discussed during an open evening, once per term. A written report on progress will be sent to parents at the end of the school year. Parents are encouraged to take an interest in their child's education and to facilitate this, the plans for each term are sent to the parents.

MAIN SCHOOL

The school encourages high standards within the broad curriculum. This is based on the National curriculum, which expects the KS2 level or 5 to be reached by the age of 11. Whilst all curriculum areas will be addressed, certain subjects will be taught a level 5/6 by age 11. Our mainstream education is formal; we have increased our project work to prepare children for senior school. Classes are small and taken by form teachers for Years 1 to 4, then by specialist teachers in English, Mathematics and Science for years 5 and 6. History, Georgraphy, French, and ICT are taught throughout the school. All children are expected to work hard and do their best in every activity.

All children are given 'homework' - ranging from spellings and tables in the first years, to set work in the higher forms. A close link between home and school is important. We monitor each pupil's progress throughout the term, holding regular open evenings to keep parents informed and involved, and are always available to discuss areas of concern.

We encourage parents to support the school in order to give each child the opportunity to succeed in whichever field they choose and to encourage self-awareness and a feeling of community within the school.

Working together for the benefit of your child creates a secure and happy atmosphere - a greenhouse for learning.
