Sidmouth Primary - a great place to learn, a special place to be at the heart of the community

Remember, be safe on the internet

General Information about our School

Sidmouth Primary School is situated on the western side of the city of Kingston Upon Hull. Our school building is a Grade 2 listed building built in 1911 as a Demonstration School for the local college.

We have approximately 200 children in our nursery and the main school. Much work has been done to update the building so that it is now a modern primary school. We have our own field, accessed from the playground via a private walkway. Our playground has been developed in conjunction with the children, to stimulate creative play, and includes two impressive climbing frames.

As well as our well resourced classrooms we have an SEN / music room, resourced with instruments and a piano. This room is also used as an audio visual room. We have three libraries in our school, one in each teaching area. We also have a well equipped ICT suite.

We have three halls. The main hall is used for whole school assemblies, lower school assemblies, school meals and converts to a gymnasium for the children in Key Stage 2. The upstairs hall has a library; it also contains an additional mini computer suite and is used for small group activities. The lower school hall is used for lower school assemblies, Foundation stage lunches, school productions, some nursery activities (including PE) and converts to a gymnasium for the pupils in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Each class has at least one computer and computers are often grouped so that more computer time can be used. The computers are linked to a network which includes internet access which is filtered to protect pupils from accessing undesirable sites.

Resources are well organised and at a good level to effectively teach the National Curriculum. Our community room provides crèche facilities at regular times each week, college courses for parents each term and a Kids Club open until 6.00 pm every evening and during school holidays provides child care.
Free breakfasts for all pupils are provided from 8.00 am each day. Free fruit is given to Foundation and Key Stage One children each morning playtime.
Our large playground and our garden area are currently at phase two of their development and are set to be developed further with additional play equipment, seating and garden areas to be provided.

We have a smart school uniform. Items of uniform can be bought from the school office; these are sold at cost with the school making no profit. Our parents are very supportive of our uniform policy and all other aspects of school life. Our aim is always to generate a positive ethos at all times.

AIMS

Provide your child with teaching of high quality and a curriculum which meets their needs and the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Use the school resources efficiently and effectively to ensure good value for money.

Promote a caring attitude towards others and to encourage consideration and courtesy at all times.

Enable the children to achieve the highest possible standards and make good progress in relation to their prior attainment.

To prepare your child for the transition to secondary education.

To enhance your child's awareness of the local environment and the world outside school.

To provide a disciplined and caring environment in which pupils may work and play without being subjected to harm or distress; and in which they may enjoy their time at school.

Environment Club

The school has recently acquired two allotments, one for the school and one for the Kids Club. Sidmouth takes gardening very seriously it has numerous flower beds around the school, and its own sensory garden. The school recently won both the Wyke In Bloom, and also the Hull in Bloom competition. The school has been recommended to enter the Britain in Bloom Competition. The school holds a planting day in June when the children, parents and the community all spend the day planting and weeding.

Fuse Club

Fuse is a Bible Club running on a Wednesday led by the Newland St John's team.

The school takes part in various community events during the year, carol singing at the Newland Avenue Light Switch on and singing and dancing at the Newland Traders Summer Fair.

Computers

The school boasts a state of the art computer suite which has over 20 computers. Each classroom also has its own computer and interative whiteboard. Mr Stephenson a specialist ICT teacher works alongside year 5 and 6 every week to extend their computer skills.

Other Sports Clubs

Other sports clubs such as table tennis, badminton, basketball, dance, hockey and cross country running are held during appropriate terms for all age groups. Cricket is played weekly after school in the Summer terms. Cycling proficiency training takes place during the summer term for year 6.
After introducing many of our children to new sports we then do our best to link with a community club so they continue to develop their skills out of the school environment. Many of our pupils have represented the city/county in many sports.

EXTENDED SCHOOL

What is the Extended School and how does it affect me?

An exciting new Government initiative is changing the face of local schools and the communities they serve. And this is your chance to contribute to the way your local community school will serve you the local residents.

The idea is for all schools by the year 2010 not only to provide education for its children, but to be open from 8 in the morning until 6 in the evening offering a whole range of activities for children, parents and local residents alike.

Sidmouth Primary has been chosen as one of eight lead schools in Hull and our aim is to show other schools in Hull how this scheme could work. We will be working with Stepney, Pearson, Newland St Johns, St Vincent's, St Nicholas and Clifton Primaries, so you will be able to see what real benefits we could deliver to this area of Hull.

This is your chance to get involved. At this stage, we at Sidmouth already know what kind of activities we provide but with the redevelopment of our community rooms, now is a good opportunity to think again about what we do offer, what we could offer and what we should offer.

And that is where you come in! Are there any activities you might like to try? Are there any skills you have that you think you might like to offer others? Is there anything missing in this community that together we could provide?
