Welcome to the web site for
Sonning C of E Primary School

Welcome to the Sonning CE Primary School website. We are a growing school on the outskirts of Reading located in the picturesque riverside village of Sonning-on-Thames. We are proud of our reputation and achievements especially our school’s Christian ethos which reflects our links with both the local community and St. Andrew’s, our parish church. The pupil version of our mission statement reflects this:
‘We will do our best and what is right as Jesus taught us’
We have a dedicated and committed team of staff, governors and parents who work in partnership to provide a supportive and caring environment where everyone is valued and encouraged to contribute to the school community.
This website is intended to give an introduction to the way in which our school works, its activities, organisation and events. I hope that you will find it both useful and informative, whether you are an existing or prospective parent. I hope that you will particularly enjoy looking at the ways in which you can support your child in their learning journey through visiting some of the curriculum sites mentioned here.

Tips To Help Your Child With Learning

Published on this page are some tips and advice on how you can help your children with learning at home.  We have started with reading and comprehension, and intend to expand the topics over time. We hope you will find this section useful.
Reading and Comprehension
Following the successful Reading Surgery which we held in November, it was agreed that we would publish our handouts to make them available to all parents. With this in mind we have put them here for you to download and print at home.
                                What does the writer mean?
How does the writer use language?

School and Class Council

As part of our Healthy Schools work, Sonning School has active school and class councils. These have been set up to enable pupils to participate in the running of our school.

Class Councils are generally run by the pupils themselves and offer the children a chance to discuss issues affecting them in their daily school life.  It allows each class time to decide what their priorities are, what is working well in school and what areas are in need of change, and how to go about making these changes.
Once the class has agreed on its priorities, these are taken to the School Council. The School Council is made up of two elected members from each class who meet with Mrs Green half-termly to discuss the issues raised. The school councillors then report back to the class.
Several changes have taken place so far as a result of these discussions including split playtimes and rotas for the ballgames and adventure areas.

Sonning C of E Breakfast Club

Sonning Breakfast Club’s aim is to provide a fun and caring environment and a healthy breakfast for any child attending Sonning C of E School.  The club will be held in Beech Lodge from 7.45am to 8.45am when the school day starts. We will then walk all children round to the school doors.

Breakfast will be served at tables and we then aim to offer different activities and games. We hope to take into consideration the preferences and thoughts of the children with ideas of games and breakfast.

Children will be encouraged to develop a sense of belonging in a calm atmosphere.

All the rules will be discussed with the children. We hope to encourage good manners, being kind to each other and to share. We hope the children will feel involved and enjoy the time spent at the club, Parents will then be happy to leave them.

"Breakout" After School Club

The After School Club at Sonning, known as ‘Breakout’, runs on the school premises Mon-Fri during term time, from the end of school until 6 pm. Children may also attend for a part session until 4.30 pm. The sessions are open to all full-time pupils and can be booked half-termly or on an ad hoc basis, with a nutritious snack included.

We provide a friendly and safe environment where the children can enjoy a range of interesting activities. Regular activities are outdoor play on the school adventure playground, arts and crafts, Lego, board games, bingo, and cooking. From time to time we also invite in parents and outside visitors to share skills with the children. Recent activities have included street dancing (by The Talent Stop), football, guitar, candle making, drama, taekwondo and acrobatics.

The Club has been operating for5 years and has had two successful Ofsted inspections. The Club is also a member of WOOSH (Wokingham Out Of School Hours network), which keeps us in touch with other out of school clubs in the area. We have the invaluable support of the Early Years Development and Childcare team from Wokingham District Council. We are also very grateful for the support of Mrs Green and of the school staff.

For more information please look at the Club Prospectus or drop in for a visit to meet our supervisor, Valerie Backhouse and her three playworkers; Jean Morice, Lorna Oliff and Natalie Rosset.
