  Welcome to St Bernadette's

Autumn Term 2007

Monday 3rd September 2007 - INSET DAY (school closed to pupils)

St Bernadette’s is a one-form entry voluntary aided school under the trusteeship of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.  It was founded to provide places for baptised Catholic children from the parishes of St Mary, Preston Park, and St Thomas More, Patcham.  There are currently 215 children on roll.

St Bernadette’s is set in pleasant grounds, with its own playing field, hard surface playground and grassed play areas.  Accommodation includes eight classrooms, some with interactive Smartboards, a hall/gym, a well resourced library an ICT suite and a learning support unit and a newly built Foundation Stage outdoor play area.  The premises provide a well maintained and attractive learning environment for all our children.

St Bernadette’s is very generously supported by a dedicated team of Governors, who work quietly and earnestly to ensure that the school continues to provide the very best possible for all our children.

The Parent Teacher Association work tirelessly to organise social events for children and parents, and our Summer Fair Committee provides us with a magnificent school event each year.  They both give the school regular and generous financial support which has been used to improve the resources available to pupils and staff.

Any parents wishing to visit our school are most welcome, but please telephone or write to the Headteacher, Mrs Bernadette Connor, to make an appointment so that someone will be available to speak to you and to show you around.

We are all special.
God made each one of us
and he calls us by name to do His work.
All of us here at St Bernadette's
make up the school family.
As brothers and sisters within that family,
we love each other and we respect each other.
We respect the world in which we live.
We rejoice in each other's successes.

We pray together. We always do our best.
We make the most of every opportunity, knowing that we all have a special part to play in the building of God's world.

Our school Mission Statement provides for us an overall framework for both general and more specific school aims, and is the foundation from which all aspects of our school community develop.

In accordance with its Mission Statement, the school aims to:

  • provide a Catholic Christian setting for the acquisition of skills, knowledge, values and attitudes needed for life;
  • develop in pupils a sense of self-worth and respect for themselves and for the needs of others;
  • foster communication and co-operation between home, school and parish;
  • ensure that pupils have equal access to all areas of the curriculum without discrimination;
  • support and encourage teaching and support staff so that they may develop personally, spiritually and professionally;
  • maintain ‘prayer in action’ and encourage pupils to respect God’s world;

To achieve these aims, the school will:

  • offer a broad and balanced curriculum, carefully planned and evaluated, and encourage, through example, assemblies and discussion, the development of the whole person;
  • encourage openness between parents and school and between school and parish through formal and informal discussion, newsletters, worship and social gatherings;
  • highlight conservation and respect for God’s world through lessons and assemblies; develop the ‘nature area’ in school; promote sponsored events and active support for charities in this field;
  • actively encourage all pupils to participate fully in school life to the best of their ability within the supportive environment offered by St Bernadette’s;
  • make worship, prayer and celebration an integral part of school life.

The curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced and stimulating, to challenge and motivate each child to aim for excellence, and to take pride in all they do.  Through a wide variety of techniques, we aim to encourage children to develop the skills and strategies of independent learning, while promoting their spiritual, mental and physical development to prepare them for further learning and the responsibilities of adult life.

Central to the school’s life and work are the teaching and living out of the Catholic faith. It is our belief that the Christian life of the home is supported, nurtured and sustained by the Christian nature of our school. The school seeks to extend and integrate the children’s experience of family life and school life, so that each child can develop an understanding of what it truly means to be a member of the family of God.

Religious Education is taught to all children in the school and is considered central to the whole school curriculum. The programme that is recommended by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton is the 'Here I Am' Scheme. Through this scheme, the children are taught the basis of Catholic faith and morality, through constant reference to their own life experience. They are helped to come to a fuller knowledge and love of God, which will develop into mature Christian living. Non-Catholic children may be excused from Collective Worship and some parts of the Religious Education programme.

The school meets for assembly four mornings a week, either as a class, as a Key Stage or all together in a whole school celebration. Groups of children or classes take it in turn to lead the rest of school in prayer and reflection. The children are fully involved in the preparation of both Mass and assembly. We visit the parishes of St Thomas More and St Mary for services, liturgical celebrations and, on some occasions, Holy Days of Obligation. The school is well supported by Monsignor John Hull and Father Oliver Heaney. All parents are warmly invited to celebrate any school Mass, liturgy or class assembly with us.

In our recent Ofsted Inspection, St Bernadette’s was praised for the range and quality of extra-curricular activities offered to our pupils.  In addition to class outings, visits and excursions, there are opportunities to develop individual interests through music, art, sports, ICT and homework clubs, some of which are listed below.

 Cross Country

 Environmental Club

We are extremely grateful to all parents and staff who arrange, provide or support extra- curricular activities.  They are invaluable to the life and work of St Bernadette’s School.
