A brief history of St Ethelbert's School

St. Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary School is a Roman Catholic Voluntary aided school. The school is under the trustee of the Bishop of Northampton   We are situated about one and a half miles from the centre of Slough close to the Berks/Buckingham boundary on the edge of the green belt.

We are at the heart of two communities, St. Ethelbert’s and Holy Redeemer. In parish, school and home, we aim to develop the children's spiritual and academic lives.

Children start school in the Nursery aged 3+. Full time education is then available for children aged 4 to 11 years. The school is two-form entry with over 300 pupils on roll.

For over a hundred years, St. Ethelbert’s School has served the Catholic community in central Slough. From small beginnings in Victoria Street, the school has now grown to its present size and now occupies a substantial site in Wexham Road.

The Story of St Ethelbert

Pope Gregory was in the market in Rome and saw some slaves. The Pope sent Augustine to England. Augustine and his monks went in a boat and when they saw England they said "It looks cold" and they turned back to Rome. The Pope was angry and sent Augustine back to England. He met King Ethelbert and Queen Bertha and told them about Jesus. King Ethelbert got baptised a Christian. He was the first Christian king of England.

One day Pope Gregory went to the market. He saw a man with some slaves. He said "Where do these slaves come from?" "England." said the man. Pope Gregory sent Augustine and his monks on a boat to England. They did not want to go but Gregory said they had to. They met King Ethelbert and Queen Bertha and Augustine baptised King Ethelbert. He was the first Christian king of England.

St Ethelbert's Pancake Race 2005

Once again it was time for our annual pancake race. Mums and Dads must have been very busy on Monday night, making pancakes for their children to take to school on Tuesday – although there were a few ready-made pancakes.

The event took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Junior playground. Children from Reception to Year 6 took part, and what a fun event it was. There was some fantastic pancake flipping from the children and I'm glad to report that nobody broke their frying pan or mislaid their pancakes.

After the children's race, we had the anticipated race of the afternoon………..THE TEACHERS' RACE, although I think the children were looking forward to it more than the teachers. However, they didn't disappoint us and it turned out to be the funniest race of the afternoon, as we knew it would be. Some of them must have been practising all night, while others, obviously, has no previous experience. They flipped, flopped and dropped their way through the race, much to the delight of the whole school. What a race.

On the day there were no winners or losers, it was a day for fun and laughter, a day when we joined together as a community to enjoy ourselves and take part in a tradition shared by many.
