About Our School

Welcome to the St. George's C of E (Aided) Middle School website. St. George's is the smallest of the three middle schools on the Isle of Sheppey and as such we regard ourselves as having a family atmosphere where children are cared for in a positive and friendly manner.

Many of the staff have strong links with the Island - we certainly feel part of the Island community!

Mission Statement

In keeping with our Christian ethos, we at St. George’s aim to create a happy, secure environment in which all members of the school community can take advantage of high academic standards to grow in self esteem and fully develop their potential.

Aims of the School

  • To promote and nurture a Christian ethos
  • To ensure that all pupils achieve an optimal level of attainment
  • To provide high quality learning through high quality teaching
  • To provide a safe, secure and caring environment for all members of the school community
  • To establish and maintain positive relationships with our partners
  • To provide a broad and balanced curriculum, enhanced by other learning activities, to meet pupil's needs.

Description of the School

St George's is a co-educational Church of England Voluntary Aided Middle School for children aged 9-13 years.

In September 1997 we moved into a brand new purpose built school equipped to the highest standards.

The facilities available to the children include:

  • Assembly Hall/Gymnasium with permanent stage
  • 12 Classrooms
  • 1 Music Room
  • 2 Science Laboratories
  • 1 Design Technology Room
  • 1 Art Room with Pottery Kiln
  • 1 Food Technology Room
  • 1 Information Technology Suite
  • 2 Libraries – Fiction and Non-Fiction
  • Dining Area
  • Changing Rooms

We have two hard playing areas.  One equipped with benches for quiet recreation : the other, which has provision for several tennis courts, is used for more energetic games at playtime.

The school site is large, commanding exceptional views over the Island, and we have extensive playing field provision.

Since 1990 the school has been designated four form entry.  This means that we can admit up to 120 pupils in each year group.  This expansion still makes us the smallest of the three middle schools on the Island, a point we feel benefits children transferring from their first school.

What is an Aided School?

As an Aided School there are close links with the Church.  Clergy from the CE churches (along with other denominations) take assembly on a regular basis.  The Foundation Governors, appointed by the Church Authorities form a major part of the Governing body and share the responsibility for maintaining the Christian ethos of the school, where children are cared for as individuals.

ADMISSIONS

Information

St George's is a Church of England Aided Middle School, but a connection with the church is not essential when applying for a place.  Preference will be given to children who do have a church connection and parents who wish to pursue this point must get their local vicar/priest or minister to personally sign their preference form. Simply writing down the name of the clergy will not be enough and applications stating a church connection will be checked.

We admit children from all primary schools on the Island and because of the fact that we are the smallest middle school, several parents choose us because they want their child to gain the benefits of belonging to a smaller rather than larger community.

The staff at St. George's work very closely with the primary schools to ensure a smooth transition from the first to the middle age range.

The planned admission limit is 120 pupils, and if the number of applications received should exceed this number a special sub-committee of the Governors review the applications.

Criteria

The Governors of St George’s CE (Aided) Middle School have adopted the following criteria in respect of admitting pupils to the school.

The following criteria will be applied in the order in which they are prioritised:

  1. Children with a Church affiliation. (The terms of the affiliation will be decided by the Foundation Governors) NB Church is defined as Members of the Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland
  2. Children with brothers and sisters or other close family members already attending the school i.e. stepbrothers/sisters, not cousins
  3. Children with medical or compassionate needs
  4. Nearness and ease of access to the school
  5. Other children within the Local Education Authority

CURRICULUM

What we aim to teach

The school stresses the importance of the child as an individual and to this end our general aim is to offer equal opportunities to all children and to ensure that they fully develop their abilities within a challenging yet enjoyable and secure school environment.  The individuality of each child is respected and valuing the feelings of others is openly encouraged.

Our aims and objectives are in line with those published by the Local Education Authority and with those specified in the National Curriculum.

The School Curriculum

The Governors have appointed a Curriculum Committee to provide them with information and considered advice on these matters and to assist the staff in the development of the curriculum.

We aim to give all the children a good general education appropriate to their age and to their particular level of ability and attainment.  Thus we offer a balance of subjects throughout the four years with a gradual development from an integrated approach in the Years 5 and 6 to a more specialised approach in Years 7 and 8.

The range of subjects offered covers the National Curriculum and our organisation provides a smooth transition between the primary and secondary phases.
