St. Katharine's Knockholt Church of England Primary School

St. Katharine's Knockholt is a Church of England aided school for children ages 4 to 11. It is situated in a village location opposite the Parish Church.

The school has four classes, two for the Foundation and Key Stage One age group (4+ to 7+) and two for the Key Stage Two pupils (7+ to 11+).

St. Katharine’s Knockholt Church of England (Aided) Primary school is situated in a village location opposite the Parish Church. We are indeed fortunate to have extensive and beautiful grounds that we can use to enhance the education we offer.

The school has four classes, two for the Foundation and Key Stage One age group (4+ to 7+) and two for the Key Stage Two pupils (7+ to 11+).

Key Stage 1                  Hedgehog Class has Reception children plus Year 1

Squirrel Class has Year 1 and Year 2.

Key Stage 2                  Rabbit Class has Year 3 and Year 4

Badger Class  has Year 5 and Year 6

Hedgehog, Squirrel and Badger Classes are housed in the main building, Rabbit Class is housed in our recently completed New Build.  We have a new hall used for P.E. and whole school activities, a separate music room, a newly created outside Early Years Learning Area and a spacious library in the main building.  We have a new kitchen adjacent to the new hall where we can provide cooked lunches for those children who wish to have a hot meal.

The recently developed School House also enriches our learning Environment.  There is a teacher's resource centre upstairs. an art and cookery facility for the children downstairs, a base for our Additional Educational Needs Teacher which will provide an area for small focused teaching groups and there will also be space for individual music tuition.  The grounds surrounding the School House have been developed into a sensory garden, an environmental area and a working garden for the children.

We also have an additional mobile room that is used by a Pre-school group.

At St. Katharine’s we believe in the following aims:

  • To provide an excellent education for children of all abilities and backgrounds, where each child receives a variety of focused experiences that are relevant to their age and level of understanding. These are based on the National Curriculum and Agreed syllabus for Religious education.

  • To provide a safe and positive environment where children can develop the attitudes that will help them to be flexible, open-minded and understanding of others and where they can continue to learn to be responsible for their own actions.

  • To be an integrated part of the village community and to confirm our Church of England status by our strong Christian ethos and active involvement with St Katharine’s Church.

  • Through good communication between Governors, parents and staff we will endeavour to work together in a committed and enthusiastic way where all feel a valued part of the school community.

Children learn… through their natural enthusiasm and if they are given time. They learn if they can use their senses and they can work with ‘real things’.

Children learn… at different rates and if they are closely matched with what they have been set to do. They learn if they are taught in a well-managed, secure and happy classroom where the atmosphere is calm and purposeful.

Children learn… where they feel a sense of value in what they do. They also learn if home and school have the same aspirations and where education is seen as a working partnership.

At St. Katharine’s we will do all we can to create this ideal learning environment.

While the children are with us they will cover two stages of the National Curriculum and Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. They will follow a broad and balanced curriculum incorporating English, Maths, Science, Religious Education, Information Technology as well as programmes for Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, and Physical Education, French, P.H.S.E. and Citizenship.  We have strong links with a church primary school in Uganda and we constantly look towards broadening horizons and enriching the curriculum.

Text Box: Work is approached through a series of themes. Some of these may be ongoing throughout the year (for example Number skills), some may be a block of time spent on a specific area (for example a book unit for English, an art focus on sculpture) or, they may be made up of various subject areas (for example a topic on Water may incorporate ideas from geography, science, art and music). Each topic is carefully planned and fits into a progression over the seven years of a child’s education at St. Katharine’s.

Text Box: Personal, Health and Social Education is also planned into the curriculum. We will aim to encourage the children to have knowledge of, and respect for, their bodies and we will show them the importance of developing good habits. As the children mature, the Year 6 pupils will be given the opportunity to discuss the changes that are happening to them.

Questions will be answered honestly and this may take us into the field of relationships but formal sex education is not included in our curriculum.

Parents will be notified when this will take place and a meeting can be arranged for parents to meet with the teachers involved.

Every child is monitored and assessed continually in order to provide the educational opportunities that are appropriate and challenging. Our teachers carefully level the work so that if humanly possible, all children can access the National Curriculum to the best of their ability.

For some children there may be a degree of extra support necessary. We see it as important that the need for such help is identified early and provided as soon as possible. Parents are encouraged to come and talk to us if they have any concerns, as partnerships with good communications are vital.

Extra-curricular activities

At St. Katharine’s we provide as many extra-curricular activities as possible. They will vary according to the staff who are available but will always include sporting opportunities and music.   We have facilities for football, netball, short tennis, cricket and even our own outdoor heated swimming pool with changing rooms.

Early Years

We provide an Early Years programme based on the Early Learning goals. We are working in close partnership with our Pre-School that is based on the same site. Attendance at Rainbow  Pre-School is not, however an automatic admission to St. Katharine’s, Knockholt Primary School.

We have a one phase entry in September, although parents can decide to delay admission in certain circumstances. Please feel free to discuss this matter with the school.

At the beginning of the year, Year R children will have a phased entry while they adjust to the new routines. This will be discussed at an evening for new parents in the summer term before the child starts school. There will also be visits for the children around this time so that they too feel confident about the next step they will be making.
