The Headmaster's Welcome

St Leonards has been innovative and in the forefront of education since its foundation in 1877. We educate children from the ages of 4 to 18 and are determined in so doing to help them to develop a life-long love for learning. I strongly believe that this is the most important way to prepare today’s young people to succeed in our fast changing world.

About St Leonards

The School and its Ethos

St Leonards School and Sixth Form College in St Andrews is fully co-educational and welcomes day pupils from the ages of 4 to18, with the option of boarding from the age of 12.

Our forward-thinking educational programme is designed to maximize the potential of each and every student. We teach them to work effectively, communicate articulately, respect others and participate with purpose.

Children develop athletic and artistic skills through our extensive facilities for sport, art, drama, music and IT, contained within a secure campus. We also benefit from links to St Andrews University and the wider town.

We are strongly committed to preparing young people for the challenges of life ahead.

Historic and scenic location

St Leonards School and Sixth Form College occupies its own campus in a prominent position on the edge of St Andrews, a thriving and charming university town on the Fife coast.

St Andrews is well known for its colourful history, castle and cathedral ruins, miles of sandy beach and a long-established golf tradition. Pupils have access to some of the world's best golf courses at a surprisingly low cost.

St Andrews is an hour’s drive from Edinburgh or two hours from Glasgow, both of which have international airports. There are also frequent train and bus connections to both cities.

Our administrative staff can make all the necessary travel arrangements for our students.

Broad, rigorous education

St Leonards offers a broad, rigorous education and exceptional opportunities, while instilling confidence, responsibility and independence.

It has led the way in Scottish Education since 1877, and continues to break new ground after it was one of the first schools in the country to launch the International Baccalaureate Diploma in September 2006.

Life lessons of consideration for others and an awareness of the world at large also play an important part at St Leonards. Students are encouraged to learn, explore and discover: to be individuals but to benefit from the fun of a strong school community.

ACCOMMODATION

St Leonards provides accommodation in the heart of St Andrews. The campus has a number of traditional houses that have modernised and offer a homely environment.

All residences are equipped with study bedrooms, common rooms and kitchen facilities to make light meals. Students are involved in the running of their residence and in the setting and upholding of standards of behaviour.

SPORT

Opportunity

With the fresh Scottish air and miles of sandy beaches on our doorstep, St Leonards is a natural place to enjoy the outdoors.

We believe that students will welcome and relish the fact that academic and non-academic achievements are appreciated at St Leonards, and all students have the chance to participate in a remarkably wide range of sports.

Making full use of our sporting facilities, which include an all-weather surface, squash courts, 25m heated indoor swimming pool, gymnasium and extensive playing fields, the pupils are offered every opportunity to excel in a broad range of team and individual sports. We know there is an activity for everyone and we want to find it. Through high levels of enthusiasm and commitment all pupils exceed their expectations and some even compete at National or International level. You are never too young to aspire to be the best.

Many choices

Sport is featured both within the curriculum, and in our extensive Activities Programme. Students are encouraged to broaden their horizons and experience as wide a range of opportunities as possible. Our sporting programme takes into account not only our excellent on-site facilities, but also makes full use of those in St Andrews and the surrounding area, creating an extensive range of opportunities for all.

Based in St Andrews the ‘home of Golf’, the St Leonards Golf Club offers an unrivalled opportunity to play on the most famous Links Golf courses in the world. Our carefully developed Golf Programme encompasses all ages and abilities from Nursery to the Sixth Form College, focusing on rules and etiquette from an early age. We also host our very own National Junior Golf Championships.

Within the P.E. Department, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, which is particularly popular with students, continues to go from strength to strength with several students achieving the prestigious Gold Award each year.

Tradition

St Leonards golf is very much part of the centuries-old St Andrews Tradition, and we believe that it develops not only sporting ability but also fosters ideals of commitment, determination, self motivation and other broader life skills. This link with long standing tradition and its ideals enables students at St Leonards to contribute positively to the life of the school and also that of the wider community.

The first recorded game of women's Lacrosse was played in Scotland at St Leonards in the spring of 1890. The first Headmistress of the school, Miss Louisa Lumsden, had the opportunity to visit Montreal in September of 1884, where she saw a match played between the Canghuwaya Indians and the Montreal Club. In a diary entry Miss Lumsden said, "It is a wonderful game, beautiful and graceful. I was so charmed with it that I introduced it to St Leonards". Today at St Leonards we continue to embrace Lacrosse as a major game in the sports programme.

With such richness of opportunity all round, there is never a dull moment in our students’ sporting lives.
