The organisational structure of the school at present provides for 12 class groups which cover the full age range of 4+ to 12. Clearly, therefore, there are some mixed age classes within the school containing children from adjacent chronological years. Where a year group has to be divided, this is done on a chronological basis. Class sizes vary, but the average number of pupils per teacher is 25. Teachers work very closely together to ensure continuity and progression. Each class teacher is responsible for teaching their class in the majority of areas, although some specialisation exists particularly in French, PE, Music and IT.
The learning programmes are prepared and put into practice by teachers working collaboratively. In this way, all children can benefit from their experience and expertise. Within each classroom a variety of teaching strategies and techniques are used. Whole-class teaching, group work and individual study are all employed at various times, according to their appropriateness for a particular task.

Parents wishing to apply for a place at St. Mary Magdalene School should do so in plenty of time. Completed application forms should be returned to the school with a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate, or a letter from your minister/vicar supporting your application.
Admissions are considered by the Admissions Committee of the Governing Body. Decisions on admissions for a school year are usually made in February, and parents are informed and offered a place. Children are admitted into the Reception Class in September on a full-time basis when they are four, provided that they reach the age of five by the following August.
If you are successful in obtaining a place for your child at St. Mary Magdalene School, a school induction programme exists in order to assist your child’s entry into full-time education. A meeting for all parents concerned is held approximately half a term prior to your child starting school. A number of induction visits are arranged for your child in the subsequent weeks so that they can meet their class teacher and other class members. We find that this makes the transition from home/nursery as smooth as possible.
