St. Michael's School

We will be creating a resource for the new applied science GCSE linked directly to science in the workplace in the North East of England. We will look at areas of the chemical industry that are vital to the course but difficult to teach in the classroom.

We want to illustrate to pupils the relevance and importance of science on their doorstep and global responsibility in action. As well as assisting in dispelling myths about the chemical industry we will show the students the range of career opportunities available through the study of science.

The judges felt that this project meets a defined need of the pupils at the school. The use of industry partners adds considerable weight to the entry and shows the strong value placed on local needs. The entry contains a very strong evaluation procedure to ensure its success.

Mission Statement

"The purpose of St. Michael's R. C. School is to serve the whole community from which our pupils are drawn by offering them an extensive range of educational, pastoral and liturgical experiences within a caring Christian context ..."

We aim to raise the standards of teaching and learning in all subjects.  As a Science college, St. Michael's will, in addition

  • Develop in our pupils an awareness and understanding of the importance of Science and scientific knowledge through the delivery of a more diverse but appropriate scientific curriculum;
  • Enhance our Science and Maths facilities and resources for use by our pupils, our partner schools and our wider community groups;
  • Deliver an enriched scientific curriculum that will be accessible to all pupils, regardless of ability, and which will encourage them to continue the study of Science and Maths post-16;
  • Through improved partnerships with our family of schools, develop in our pupils real aspirations for scientific achievement which begins before they join St. Michael's;
  • Improve the skills of pupils, parents, staff and our community partners through the imaginative use of ICT;
  • Through links with our community and business groups, offer an enriched scientific experience to all members of the community, including our own pupils.
