History and Ethos
St. Paul's is a Church of England primary school with a nursery. We admit children from the age of three to eleven.

The school's history
St. Paul's was founded by Arthur Henry Wagner in 1887. After 83 years in Little Russell Street and Russell Place, it moved to its present site in 1970. Today's pupils enjoy modern buildings with good facilities, recreational areas and landscaped gardens. Some traditional educational values remain from the school's early years. The intellectual, physical, moral and spiritual development of each pupil remain the school's prime concern. To this end it holds in high regard the qualities of: self discipline, motivation, initiative, responsibility, compassion and tolerance.

A Church of England Foundation
The school takes pride in its Church of England foundation; not in the sense that all pupils, parents and staff share identical beliefs, but in that it establishes the ethos of the school community. Members of all faiths are encouraged to maintain their own religious commitment, while showing respect for others and recognising those things that are held in common. The school provides support for the individual, while he or she is encouraged to discover and develop his or her particular abilities and personal values. The pupil's search for values and meaning will continue when he or she leaves, but the varied experiences of school life should have prepared him/her for forming values in an adult world which is less structured, and often, less caring.

The School's success
The school has many achievements and successes. These have been recognised by OfSTED who have commented favorably on the high standards in the foundation stage, the all round development of pupils, and the care for their well being. Inspectors reported on children=s positive attitude to work, their sense of citizenship and their ability as confident and articulate communicators. These achievements have been recognised by two national awards.

Starting school
Care is taken is taken to ensure that new pupils enjoy a successful start at St. Paul's. Children beginning their school career are invited, with their parents, to make introductory visits. All members of our school community know the importance of supporting children who are new to our school. St Paul=s School is a small community, its members know each other well and share responsibility for one another. This is particularly true for children new to the school, who are welcomed and made to feel secure.

The care of children
Every care is taken to ensure that children are safe and secure whilst at school. The school has a single point of entry, staff are vigilant and children are trained to be alert to danger. The school has a number of trained first aiders who have access to first aid facilities. We maintain a record of emergency contacts in addition to parents' home and work phone numbers. If a pupil is seriously injured or falls ill in school, we make every effort to contact parents. If this is impossible, or the need for treatment is urgent, we use our judgement and act in the best interests of the child.


How the school is organised
The school is grouped into three sections:

  • the foundation stage composed of children in the nursery and reception classes,
  • key stage one for children who will be six or seven during the school year,
  • key stage two for children who will be eight, nine, ten, or eleven during the school year.
Children are placed into classes according to their age. Within the class children may work as individuals, in pairs, as a whole class or groups according to a task or their ability.

The Curriculum
The school aims to make learning an enjoyable experience. The curriculum is broad and stimulating, but is also designed to provide a sound grasp of fundamental skills. Learning sometimes takes place through work on cross curricular projects or topics, which are designed to ensure progression in National Curriculum subjects.

The Foundation Stage
The foundation stage begins when children enter the nursery and continues to the end of the reception class. The foundation team work closely together to ensure progress and continuity for pupils in all curriculum areas. This ensures that children will develop the basic skills needed to lay the foundations for life and learning and embark on the National Curriculum.

Key stage 1
Through topic activities and subject based tasks children cover a wide range of curriculum areas. The topics include environmental, historical, and scientific themes. We aim to achieve a balance between offering children a selection of practical activities and tasks and formal methods of developing understanding and recording. Parents contribute to the success of the school's shared reading programme which ensures that children enjoy a selection of story and information books.

Key stage 2
The key stage two curriculum builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in key stage one, ensuring continuity and progression for all pupils. Both topic and subject based approaches are followed. A variety of teaching methods are used, including class and focused group work, according to the subject or the children concerned. Tasks and activities provide opportunities for pupils to work individually, with partners and in groups. Homework is set regularly, and parental support with this and other aspects of school work is valued.


Parents / carers who wish their child to be considered for a place at St. Paul's should complete a governors enquiry form stating under which of the criteria they are applying for a place. Parents of pupils who are disabled should discuss admission arrangements with the headmaster.

  1. Children whose parents regularly attend* services at St Paul's Church, West Street, Brighton, and have children who attend St. Paul's CE School.
  2. Children whose parents regularly attend* services at St Nicholas Church, Dyke Road, Brighton, and have children who attend St. Paul's CE School.
  3. Children whose parents regularly attend* services at other Anglican Churches, and have children who attend St. Paul's CE School.
  4. Children whose parents regularly attend* services at St Paul's Church, West Street, Brighton.
  5. Children whose parents regularly attend* services at St Nicholas Church, Dyke Road, Brighton.
  6. Children whose parents regularly attend* services at other Anglican Churches.
  7. Children who have older brothers or sisters at the school.
  8. Children whose parents regularly attend* the services of a Christian Churches which is member of "Churches Together in Britain and Ireland".
  9. Children who live in the parish of St Paul's, West Street, Brighton or St Nicholas, Dyke Road, Brighton.
  10. Other children.
Preference will be given to parents naming St. Paul's as their first preference, subject to fulfilling the above criteria.

*Regularly attend is defined as attending two services a month.
