ST THOMAS A BECKET CATHOLIC INFANT SCHOOL

St Thomas a Becket is a Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Infant School for boys and girls aged 4 + to 7. Being the only Catholic School in the Eastbourne area, children travel in from Hailsham, Pevensey, Polegate and Langney. It has about 180 pupils on roll and the children are taught in single age group classes. The school is of the semi-open plan type. The agreed admission number is 60.

Both the Infant and Junior School share the same site. These buildings were erected in 1973 and 1974 respectively to replace St Joseph’s R.C. Primary School in Whitley Road, Eastbourne.

St Thomas a Becket Catholic Nursery is a private Nursery, which was founded in 1999 and is situated on the school site. It is considered to be the foundation to the school.

We provide pupils of compulsory school age (including those with special educational needs) with the basic curriculum which is balanced and broadly based, promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experience of adult life. The basic curriculum consists of the Foundation and National Curriculum as specified in the statutory Orders and Religious Education.

The curriculum is delivered, as far as possible, through a topic approach which enables pupils to relate one curriculum area to another. Children are taught individually, in groups or as a class, according to which method best suits the task.

Children are taught for 21 hours, 40 minutes per week (exclusive of registration, daily worship, lunch and playtime breaks).

Our position within Eastbourne enables us to have easy access to the town, the beach and the downs and the school makes use of its proximity to these facilities to enable pupils to gain first hand experiences of environmental, historical, science, sporting and cultural amenities.

We work hard to maintain and develop links with the Catholic Church communities so if you are reading this and you think we could benefit from linking with you – please let us know!

There is always something going on here at St Thomas a Becket Infant School. This makes for a lot of hard work and organisation but gives so much to the pupils who we know learn best by doing rather than just by being told!

This is a very busy, exciting place to be, with a dedicated staff and supportive parents. Come along and see for yourself.

PARENTS

Helping in School:  If you would like to volunteer to help in school, please complete the form  below and return it to me as soon as possible.  Helping out in school can give invaluable extra support to children and teachers as well as giving you an insight into how children are currently taught.  PLEASE NOTE:  You will be required to complete a confidential police checking form to ensure that you are not debarred from working with children.

Parent Questionnaire:  Thank you to all who returned the School Improvement Questionnaires.  The outcomes show that all parents either strongly agreed or tended to agree that their children liked coming to school, felt valued, had good relationships within the school.  They agreed that the teaching was good.  A few parents felt they disagreed on certain aspects.  These focused mainly on communication, keeping informed and awareness of school systems, especially with regard to rewards and sanctions.  We will, therefore, make this a focus for our School Development Plan.   Thank you also to those of you who have chatted to me about your dreams and aspirations for the school.
