PRIMARY SCHOOL

MISSION STATEMENT

- - - At Styal School we work together towards excellence - - -

INTRODUCTION

Styal Primary School is situated within the village of Styal on the outskirts of Wilmslow. Styal Village itself forms part of the site established by Samuel Gregg in which he founded Quarry Bank Mill in 1784.  The Mill was one of the first generation of water-powered cotton mills and is in fact, one of the few to remain intact to this day.

When it was built Quarry Bank Mill quickly became the nub of a thriving new community. Samuel Gregg then built cottages, an apprentice house, a chapel and a shop and then in 1823, a school.  The school, then known as Oak School, was to provide an education for the apprentices who worked at the Mill.  Still attached to the end of Gregg’s Oak Cottages, the school today plays a well established, prominent role in the community and continues to be a focal point for the village as it has done for over 170 years.

The school building, whilst traditional, has been continually updated and improved to meet the ever increasing demands of the twenty first century and provides a bright and attractive workplace for all those within it.  The school is especially fortunate in its surroundings and location, lying in 250 acres of woodland and countryside, which form a conservation area and countryside park administered by the National Trust.  The setting is truly idyllic away from traffic and pollution, in an environmentally protected area.

The main school is made up of two teaching areas, a hall, library area, infant cloakroom and toilets, staffroom, two offices and school kitchen.  Two further classrooms are located adjacent to the school, equipped with their own cloaks and toilet areas.  Accommodation is limited but staff make imaginative use of what is available and all available space is used in the children’s best interests.  The school also has an attractive playground, grassed playing area with football pitch and school garden with wildlife area, seating and a pond.  The ‘trim trail’ around the edge of the playing field offers children further exciting opportunities to develop their physical fitness and enhance their imaginative play.  There are plans to further extend outdoor provision with an adventure playground area in land adjacent to the school belonging to the National Trust.  The school is currently raising funds towards this development and seeking sponsorship from local businesses.

The Village of Styal and its surrounding area offers a wealth of learning potential to the school.  Indeed we have a tremendous amount of history and geography on our doorstep and a magnitude of English heritage at our fingertips!  The school takes advantage of this by regular visits to the Mill and to the two local churches, and by enjoying a rich variety of outdoor activities around the local area.  We also use the local public house and golf club for social events and perform regularly at Quarry Bank Mill.

We maintain a good relationship with Manchester Airport benefiting from their local community projects and by educational visits.

Finally our location affords us easy access to motorways for visits further a field and being only twelve miles away from the city of Manchester we are able to make good use of theatres, art galleries and museums

ETHOS AND VALUES

At Styal Primary School it is our intention that all children should attain their highest level of intellectual, physical, social and emotional development.  The school promotes self-discipline and acceptable codes of behaviour whilst developing self-confidence and independence which comes from a sense of self-esteem.  All children are encouraged to have lively, enquiring minds with an ability to make reasoned judgements.

Through the development of a family like, caring atmosphere at school, we aim to foster a sense of community, which is both supportive and encourages children to be self aware and sensitive to the needs of others.  All children are treated fairly and equally regardless of race, religious belief, ability or gender.  They are encouraged to take pride in their differences and to celebrate the diversity of our community.  Mutual respect and understanding is promoted and every individual’s contribution is valued.

The school’s curriculum aims to develop thinking skills and the ability to solve problems without fear of making a mistake.  Teaching is challenging, rigorous and aims to engage all individuals through a sense of enjoyment and achievement.  We believe it is crucial to develop a love of learning and a commitment towards quality.

Partnership between staff and parents is positively encouraged.  Good communication between school and home is promoted at every opportunity as is parental support and involvement in all school activities.

HOME-SCHOOL LIAISON

The school’s mission statement reflects our belief that the best form of education is a partnership between the school and the home.  Parents are always welcome at Styal and indeed many come in to work with the children on a regular basis.  Parents are very supportive of the school and give much valuable help with a range of activities.

The school holds two parents’ evenings a year, one in the autumn term and one in the spring term.  A full and detailed written report is also given in the summer term and parents are invited to look at their child’s work alongside their child in July. However, parents may see their child’s work or speak to any member of staff at a mutually convenient time.

Parents are encouraged to inform their child’s class teacher or the Headteacher if there is ever any cause for concern. We believe it is important that all issues are addressed immediately. However, if circumstances warrant, an approach to one of the school’s parent governors or the Chair of Governors can be made.

THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum in line with statutory requirements, which covers and often extends the National Curriculum.  The primary curriculum is made up of two parts, Key Stage 1, which children in Years 1 and 2 follow, and Key Stage 2, which children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 follow.  Children in the Reception year, their first year at school, follow the statutory curriculum guidelines for the Foundation Stage and work towards the Early Learning Goals.

The structure of the National Curriculum is as follows:

Core Subjects

Foundation Subjects

English

Geography

Mathematics

History

Science

Design and Technology

ICT (Information & Communication Technology)

Art and Design

Music

Physical Education

Personal, Social and Health Education

Citizenship

Religious Education

The curriculum in the Foundation Stage is organised within six areas of learning as follows:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Language and Literacy; Mathematical Development; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Physical Development; Creative Development.

We have also introduced Spanish into the Foundation Stage curriculum and Key Stages 1 and 2 with all children across the whole school having regular weekly lessons with our Reception teacher.

Each subject area has a designated member of staff specifically responsible for its implementation, progress and continuity throughout the school.  A list of all staff and their responsibilities is enclosed in Appendix A.

Each class teacher works with the subject leader to carefully plan schemes of work matched to the children’s needs, interests and abilities so that all children make appropriate progress consolidating their previous work.  Attention is given to the curriculum that is to be taught and to the relevant knowledge, skills and understanding that the children will gain.

A brief outline of what each class is to focus on each term is given in the start of term parent’s letter and a topic web is displayed on each classroom’s notice board.  Where possible, cross-curricular links are made in teaching in order to facilitate children’s understanding and learning
