WELCOME TO SUTTON VENY C.E. PRIMARY SCHOOL
|Sutton Veny CE Primary School is situated in a peaceful village just three miles from the town of Warminster. While most of our children come from Sutton Veny and the surrounding villages, some come from further afield to take advantage of the high quality provision of education in an idyllic rural setting. The grounds and buildings are exceptional, including extensive playing fields, use of the village hall and sympathetic styled extensions complementing the original Victorian school building. With a stable school roll of 140 children the school gains from being a small rural community with the benefits of 6 classes for children aged 5-11 years. The classrooms are lively and attractive, with the latest technology in addition to a well equipped ICT suite which is fully utilised by all children. |

The House System at Sutton Veny.
Each week children who have gained 8 stamps for their achievements are awarded a certificate during the Celebration Assembly.
This celebrates an individual's success.
By the time children are seven and transfer into Key Stage two, this is developed and all children at Sutton Veny School then belong to 'a house'; Deverill, Wylye, Were or Nadder (all named after local rivers).
This encourages the children to work beyond the individual success and appreciate the concept of their achievement as part of a team by each certificate gaining them a house point.
Mrs Barnard collects the house points each week and records them on the House notice board. You can find this outside the ICT suite.
In the first week back Year 6 hold a democratic election to vote for house captains. These children can be easily spotted around school wearing a house captain badge in their house colour.
It is Citizenship…our future in their hands!
One of the innovative ways the school develops children's awareness of citizenship is through team building. Each class in the school sets up specific activities at the start of the school year to enable the children to develop their team building skills towards creating a 'class identity'. Encouraging and supporting children to feel ownership of their classroom and accountability to themselves and others is the foundation of the first few days learning. All the classes agree a set of 'golden rules' as a framework for acceptable behaviour. This leads onto discussing and developing the classroom culture for effective learning.
The classes are named after towns in both Australia and New Zealand and this year Elliston class will be starting a closer link with their 'buddies' in Elliston, Australia.
In upper key Stage two, residential visits are used to provide extended opportunities for team building. Using the facilities at a range of centres such as Braeside, near Devizes, and Little Canada on the Isle of Wight, the children are presented with a range of challenges. Braeside focuses on problem solving activities whereas the Isle of Wight gives a broader experience including personal challenges through outdoor pursuits. Teachers use this experience throughout the year; success through overcoming fears, or achieving a goal during the residential visit can often help the children overcome blocks in their learning in other areas.
It is essential that you encourage your child to participate in residential visits. If you have concerns about this please discuss it with the class teacher.
Each class elects two members to represent their views on a school council. The council gives the children a forum to voice their opinions and raise concerns about issues within and without school. The meetings are formally run to give the children an idea of 'meetings' and protocols. They are encouraged to be responsible and feel accountable for taking actions in the interests of the school and community.
The Transforming Learning project has been used in the school since 1999. Later on in the autumn term, the older children participate in a diagnostic survey to determine the actual and ideal classroom climate for their learning. This is another vehicle for the children to express their views on what helps and hinders their learning in the classroom. Feedback from the children is displayed in the classroom.
WHERE'S THE TEACHER GONE?
Members of staff have total responsibility for the teaching and learning in their designated class throughout the school year…even when other teachers teach!
1. Supply teachers are employed to provide non contact time for the class teachers. This may be for the teacher to attend training, monitor and evaluate as part of their subject leader role or have a chance to stand back from the teaching to 'observe' children learning to inform their assessments for report writing. Your child may be taught by a supply teacher when their class teacher is in school.
2. We plan staff non contact time a year ahead to ensure that we use a limited number of supply teachers. With forward planning it also allows us to include them in our school training so that they are fully aware of the 'way we do things' at Sutton Veny School.
3. What we cannot plan for is absence due to ill health!
4. In addition the school is used by
* Winchester University to provide placements for students undertaking Initial Teacher Training. You will receive a letter if your child's class will be having a trainee teacher working with them.
* Local secondary schools as part of the Trident student placement scheme providing work experience for young adults.
Whatever the reason, all additional staff are subject to the same rigorous checks and induction as full time school staff. The safety and well being of your child is never compromised.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL
Each morning two members of staff are on duty on the road to 'meet and greet' children (and families) when they drop their children off for school. With this service
* You are assured that bus children have arrived and been seen safely onto school premises
* You can drop and go to save having to stop and park when bringing your children in for school.
At the end of school parking is a serious concern to us and the cause of constant dismay to a number of the villagers. Please park LEGALLY and respect the villager's drives and rights of way.
