WELCOME TO SYCAMORE LANE PRIMARY SCHOOL
We at Sycamore Lane School take great pride in the creation of a warm and friendly atmosphere for children, parents and staff. We believe that the best way to form an impression is to arrange a visit to see the school in operation. Though this document may give some of the basic detail that you require, we trust that you will accept this invitation and make an appointment to call.
The headteacher will be pleased to supply further detailed information about the school.
Details of admission arrangements are available on request but children are admitted in accordance with the Authority's current policy. Generally, children are admitted to full time education in the September preceding their fifth birthday. A staggered entry programme is arranged during the first three full weeks of term, which enables children to feel welcome and secure in their new environment. From experience we have found that the children settle into school much better with this arrangement, they make stronger friendships and the staff are better able to get to know the children, their strengths and stages of development.
Modifications to the Infant building ensure safety and Reception children also have the advantage of their own fenced playground area.
Parents by law must present their child for full time education at the beginning of the term following the child's fifth birthday.
Usually, parents moving into the area can arrange for their children's admission within 24 hours of their arrival in the new home. Contact with school is essential to decide a mutually acceptable date for admission and class allocation.
A child's Birth Certificate must be shown to the school to ensure verification of birth details.
General information about other schools in the area is available at this school, in the Authority's headquarters, New Town House and in public libraries.
Mission Statement
Our vision is:
That Sycamore Lane C.P. School plays a key role in ensuring the needs of its pupils are met and that it encourages them to develop a positive self-image and a respect for others.
That the school creates a happy, friendly and caring community.
That the children experience a wide variety of relevant learning experiences, in a purposeful, secure and stable environment.
We believe that:
All parents, staff and children should strive towards a common code of values and discipline, through which we establish the highest possible standards and expectations.
Children and adults should be constantly encouraged to demonstrate respect and tolerance for one another and to show that each individual is valued, so that they gain in confidence and maturity
All pupils should be educated to their full potential, having all received the same access to an identical range of educational opportunities.
We should continually strive to provide the best possible teaching, with a broad and balanced curriculum for all pupils.
All our resources, people, time, money and facilities must be organised and managed to achieve the most effective teaching and learning.
We must all have clear expectations and targets, which establish a climate of constant improvement and celebration of excellence and achievement.
We need to ensure that our parents and our community understand and value all that we are trying to achieve. We want to work in partnership with them to help us achieve our aims, and to be proud that their children come to Sycamore Lane C.P. School.

| EXPECTATIONS OF PUPILS AND STAFF
In order to achieve our aims we must build on the very positive and trusting relationship between staff and pupils at Sycamore Lane. We want pupils to feel proud to be at Sycamore Lane and to show it both inside and outside school in their work, attitude and behaviour.
Routine and clear consistent expectations help pupils to establish a good learning atmosphere in every class. Pupils need to know individually and as groups, exactly what staff expect of them, and we must all consistently expect high standards from everyone. Comment on good behaviour as well as good work, can minimise the impact of disruptions by dealing with problems on an individual basis.
Movement around the school should be orderly and considerate. Staff should set the highest priority on prompt arrival for the start of teaching sessions. Entry into the classroom should be quiet and orderly. Everyone in the school is entitled to expect courtesy and politeness from one another.
The start and end to lessons are important. At the start of lesson time pupils should expect to settle quickly. On entering school, pupils should know where to put coats and bags and packed lunches.
The teacher’s presence should command the respect and attention of all the pupils. Staff should keep a register of attendance for morning and afternoon sessions.
We expect school uniform to be worn and sensible footwear and no jewellery.
Pupils should speak and behave courteously to both adults and other pupils. There should be no swearing or other aggressive behaviour.
The end of sessions should be clearly planned, controlled and calm. All pupils must know what is expected of them, how to pack up the classroom and equipment neat and tidy.
CREATING A POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE
We are trying to create a climate in which effective learning can take place; a school where pupils are happy to learn and teachers are happy to teach.
We recognise that parents are a child’s foremost educators and therefore welcome their views and support. Rules and expectations have been established with the children in order to encourage self-discipline and an orderly learning environment.
We should avoid shouting at pupils as the general means of control, but it is certainly sometimes necessary. We must remember at all times to encourage and to praise. It is inevitable with children that we shall have to repeat patiently and many times the reasons for our rules. If children wilfully break essential rules, a range of sanctions will come into force, but our main objective should always be to get them to see the sense of a rule and to behave with consideration for others.
